This is a dangerous path. Sanitized biased coverage. Not sure this is a good idea.
I agree to a point - the filming of the games would likely be done by a production house like NEP or Gravity etc as they are the only ones with the scale to do so. The NRL would just have to foot the bill.
And the streamer would still do the wrap-around coverage and commentary etc.
But it does create an interesting precedent - ie. if a player plays on with a head knock and the vision is suppressed by the production, that could be a credibility issue.
The article said the NRL would buy their own equipment and not outsource. They’re interested in owning new cameras etc.
Interesting - couldn’t access that part.
I agree - not ideal. It has happened around the rest of the globe too though but it’s not a great scenario…
This happens to some extent already
Not to be a stickler. But the heading should read 2028-?
Fox/9 have the rights for 2027 season.
Another update from V’landys. Negotiations to kick off in the next fortnight. Considering selling off packages: origins, finals, Thursday night football, Friday night football. Similar to NFL package and saying that streamers will want some element of exclusivity. He thinks he’s going to get more than the AFL. He will get a rise on his previous deal but let’s see if he gets more than $600m a season.
Negotiations to kick off in the next fortnight…but they haven’t figured out if they’re selling in packages or not?
I take it that forms part of the negotiations with relevant parties. Then they would consider the various options.
Obviously lots of these articles are speculative and V’landys commentary is always just throwing a million ideas out there to create a sense of demand etc.
That’s my analysis of the article. And ofc I do not trust sources such as the Australian given their extremist ideological editorial stance.
It’s a bit Trump-esque from PVL. Hard to pin down to specifics.
The proof will be in whether these streamers actually bid or whether they are just throwing out interest.
Does the same apply to Perth? See what a 19th team is worth to the broadcasters/streamers, given the WA Premier is coming under pressure from Stokes Inc and there’s no deal for a WA Govt backed team.
If the NRL is split between four different streamers there will be outrage from fans. Fox & Nine is about the limit I’d say for a product. Should be interesting to see how it goes none-the-less when negotiations commence.
The AFL would be hoping they split it up so much it’s harder to access and benefits them.
