Let’s get around Aussie Jordan Thompson tonight, slated for 10pm and school holidays now too, taking on American star Taylor Fritz. Let’s go :green_circle: :yellow_circle:

No chance he beats Fritz with a back injury imo

Yeah agreed, wishful thinking I guess. He has done fantastic to reach the Round of 16 at the All England Club for the first time in his career.

Australia’s best since 2022 with Demon also through, when Barty, Kyrgios & Co were making slam finals and winning them.

Of course we can never forget Saturday, January 29, 2022, when Ash Barty fulfilled her date with destiny followed by the all-Australian men’s doubles final which the two Special K’s took out.

But by retiring two months later, Barty forgoed the chance to complete a career slam at the US Open; that was the only Major she failed to reach the quarter-finals at (best result: fourth round twice 2018 and 2019).

An interesting read on how long surnames are modified on the tournament’s scorebug.

Sadly, an earlier than expected finish by Jordan Thomson tonight. Not good for Nine for its “late night ratings”.

Just advertised on the tennis coverage - tomorrow nights match between De Minaur and Djokovic. At 10.30pm aest. Now that will be a big night.

5:54am AEST finish for the Alcaraz match.

With the on-demand episode for Today Early available on 9Now, I take it that Channel 9 dropped coverage at 5am as scheduled and redirected viewers to Stan?

For tonight, the 8pm AEST match is Cilic vs. (22)Cobolli at No.2, then it’s Center Court feed from 10:40pm AEST.

(Coverage begins 7:30pm AEST on 9Gem, moving to Ch 9 at 10pm local time.)

Is an ESPN stateside model something practical for Nine to do (Center on Ch 9 and No.1 on 9Gem)?

Nine’s Wimbledon coverage continued up to 5am on the main channel then switched to 9Gem this morning.

Unlike the Australian Open, which uses 9Gem for secondary coverage (and 7two when Seven had the rights between 2015-18), Nine only uses one channel for the other three majors (9Gem for both Roland Garros and the US Open due to other programming taking priority on the main channel).

But given the late night timeslot I don’t think that’s practical.

Tom Morris hosting tonight with Jelena Dokic from the Nine News set (their other set, I presume, is being used for Footy Classified).

Unexpected start to tonight’s match should keep viewers watching.

Not Nine’s preferred outcome.

Coverage continued until 5am before switching to 9Gem again.

At least there’s still some good names left in week 2:

Djokovic, Sinner, Alcaraz, Fritz, Shelton, Sabalenka, Swiatek, Bencic and the UK’s Norrie.

The following may be a bit redundant and not worth noting, but due to NRL/NRLW coverage, Wimbledon coverage will start varyingly depending on the market.

Pre-match coverage begins at 10.00pm AEST with live play (realistically) scheduled for 10.40pm AEST. Based on that:

  • For tonight, the pre-match goes out on 9Gem in Melbourne and Ch 9 elsewhere except Perth.
  • And for Friday, the pre-match goes out on 9Gem in Sydney/Brisbane and Ch 9 in Adelaide.
  • Live play is still on Ch 9 in all markets.

World feed scoreboard has successfully been ESPNized.

Update as of 1:16am AEST: Wow, wow, wow indeed. What a match that we’ve all witnessed. And I’ll leave it at that. Ch 9 now replaying the ending of the gentlemen’s doubles semifinal because the world feed did so.
