It’s clearly designed for matches throughout the day, not just a breakaway.
Nobody could’ve predicted it’d go 5 hours, you don’t plan for that.
There was no reason for the coverage to be slimmed to one broadcast channel yet though. There was a full day of fourth round tennis you could have put together without showing RLA (main channel) and without showing too much doubles (shudder). Once the fourth round is completed (yesterday), then one channel makes sense. They cut it a day early.

Show matches on 9Gem.
It might be week 2 but at this stage there are still enough singles matches scheduled for the same time on RLA and Margaret Court to warrant 2 channels. It’s the nitty gritty stage of the tournament and they’re only showing half the matches. It is inexcusable. They don’t need 11am to midnight coverage on Gem. Just show the singles matches then fill the gaps with regular programming.

ASH BARTY & RAFAEL NADAL STAR IN QUARTER FINAL ACTION TONIGHT ON NINE
Queenslander Ash Barty carries the hopes of the nation on to Rod Laver Arena tonight when she bids to become the first Australian woman in 35 years to reach the AO semi-finals.
15th-ranked Barty will have to overcome Petra Kvitova , the world No.6 and two-time Wimbledon champion.
Kvitova has reached this stage of the majors many times before. But for 22-year-old Barty, her charge to the final eight at Melbourne Park has already surpassed last year’s US Open fourth-round berth.
Barty, who crack into the world’s top 10 with a quarter-final victory, or Kvitova will earn a huge opportunity to make the Australian Open final.
The victor will play the winner of Tuesday’s other quarter-final between little-known American Danielle Collins or unseeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, which will air on Nine this afternoon.
If Barty is victorious she will become the first local woman to reach the semis since Wendy Turnbull in 1984.
In tonight’s other quarter final, 17-time Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal , ranked No. 2 in the world, will take on Frances Tiafoe , a 21-one-year-old rookie for whom reaching the quarter final is his biggest achievement so far.
Tiafoe has already caused two upsets of against higher ranked opponents – No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson and the 20th seed Grigor Dimitrov in the previous rounds.
Nadal, meanwhile, is on a mission to win his second Australian Open. Should he success, he will become the first man in the open era to win every grand slam singles title at least twice.

OzTAM live ratings are now available for last week.
The tennis had a live VPM of between 8,000 and 13,000 people watching via 9Now (nationally).
That is up on last year’s 7Plus VPM live numbers for week 3 that were between 5,000 and 8,000.

And the Fox Cricket ratings (30k odd) would be including those who don’t have a satellite or cable subscription, only watching cricket through streaming (i.e.) “Foxtel Now”
They have the Earlier box on the top left hand corner of the screen following Rafael Nadal’s victory over Tiafoe.

I don’t miss them at all. Nine is sticking to one match and not missing points like 7 last year. 7’s coverage last year was the worst.

Lleyton Hewitt must be very happy about 9Now’s VPM results for this year compared with the 7Plus and 7Tennis VPM Live Numbers. Mediaweek stated that there were 3.3 million stream starts and 58.4 million minutes being streamed over the first 7 days of the tournament.

Each to their own. I enjoyed and found the whip around to othernat he’s for updates very useful and that it gave the viewer a greater sense of being at Melbourne Park with all the different matches going on.

OSAKA, WILLIAMS, RAONIC & DJOKOVIC STAR IN DAY TEN QUARTERFINAL ACTION
Day ten of the Australian Open will kick off with an exciting quarterfinal clash between fourth seed Naomi Osaka and sixth seed Elina Svitolina . Both will be looking for a place in the their first semi-final at this Slam.
Following their encounter, Serena Williams will face Karolina Pliskova . It will mark the first meeting between the two since the 2018 U.S. Open quarterfinal, and their fourth ever. Williams has won two of their previous three clashes.
Two former top ten players, Milos Raonic and Lucas Pouille , who are both on their way back after injury, will go head-to-head in the last of the day matches. Their record against each other favours Raonic, who has won all three of their previous encounters, with Pouille yet to take a set off the Canadian.
And from 7.00pm tonight on Nine, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic takes on the Asian No. 1 Kei Nishikori in a much-anticipated quarterfinal showdown. Of the 17 matches they have played against each other, Nishikori has only won two.

Nine’s ratings will surely take a big hit tonight due to Kei Nishikori retiring hurt in the second set of his match against Novak Djokovic with a right quad injury. Herald Sun reports Nishikori had played three five-set epics on his way to the final eight which took its toll.
Nine only has a doubles match left to show for the rest of the night.

WOMEN’S SEMI-FINALS ON NINE THIS AFTERNOON
Greek youngster Stefanos Tsitsipas will meet 17-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal in semi-final action live on Nine tonight.
Tsitsipas, 20, beat Swiss great Roger Federer in the last 16, then reached his first major semi-final with victory over Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.
Spain’s Nadal, 32, has not dropped a set as he aims to become the first man to win each of the four Grand Slams twice in the Open era.
In contrast, Tsitsipas is playing in the main draw at the AO only for the second time, having lost in the first round last year.
In the first of the afternoon’s women’s semi-finals, Czech eighth seed Petra Kvitova and unseeded American Danielle Collins will lock horns on Rad Laver Arena.
While later in the afternoon, US Open champion Naomi Osaka and Czech seventh seed Karolina Pliskova will go head-to-head for a berth in Saturday’s final.

According to guides to tonight’s telecast starts half an hour early with a shortened News in Sydney and Melbourne, would this be due to Djokovic semi final scheduled to start 15min earlier than last night, so Nine can get adequate pre time in? It also gets the jump on Seven’s cricket but could also backfire for those wanting the full hour news. Nine News in Sydney also lost last night for the (first time?) this tournament
