Yes I agree with you that they constantly mention The Telegraph or sky news and probably should advertise Nine shows more. But I guess my point is that when it was released that Nine’s head of news left due to certain claims that were not favourable both 2GB and the SMH had stories about it. When it was released that Nine has issues with its culture overall it was acknowledged by the publications owned by Nine Entertainment.
If for example it happened at Seven The West Australian would not have covered it nor would Seven as a whole. You could see this with gaping holes in their coverage of certain issues. While I am sure Nine does so as well they seem to allow their mastheads more freedom in their editorial even if it is critical of their parant company unlike Seven for example.
Alan Jones and Ray Hadley had columns in the Daily Telegraph long after the Nine buyout of Fairfax went through. News Corp tabloids simplistic solutions to complex problems are more in tune with the 2GB audience, SMH is a bit to intellectual.
I would say historically the SMH leaned to the left however is moving more right since Nine’s takeover. The blatant right wing bias on 2GB just should not be allowed on a licenced platform and I would take their licence away from them if it continued in my view and if I had my way. There is no place for it as is there is no place blatant left wing bias.
Certain parts of the ABC are fairly left wing / woke. Agree that the SMH has moved a bit to the right, but much like many newspapers is a shadow of what it was content wise. Not that I ever listen, but am I correct in thinking that 2GB has moved a bit to more moderate ground with the right wing shock jocks, Alan Jones, Ray Hadley, Chris Smith etc, replaced by more moderate hosts?
In some programs yes others not so much.
Media boss John Singleton is preparing to take a tilt at Nine radio
One-time media boss John Singleton has told associates he is preparing to take a tilt at Nine’s revenue-challenged radio division.
Today industry experts have conservatively valued Nine Radio at between $25 million and $32 million, loose change for Singleton whose estimated worth has been put at $850 million.
Please not back to the future!
Unfortunately Nine thought that they are good at TV(not so much nowadays) so they would automatically be good at Radio.
Early on in Nine Radio they were talking about synergies - doesn’t look like they ever found any? The central technical ops model used in TV offers little benefit in radio because it can be run on off the shelf PC hardware. Even newsroom integration never seems to have got off the ground possibly due to the different workflows. If anything Nine Radio has made Macquarie Radio not look so bad after all.
Standby for 4GB and 6AW again though.
The last time John Singleton meddled with Melbourne radio we got MTR. How well did that go?
Wait, so the entire Nine Radio network is worth a LOT less than what Singo sold his share for? Wow.
Is it because it excludes 2UE, 4BH and Magic1278?
It’d be interesting to see if any of this eventuates - especially if we see Ray Hadley return to 2GB in some capacity.
Mind you, 2GB needs something - as I can’t see Mark Levy being as strong as what 2SM’s Chris Smith is currently pushing.
Nine were going to move the Sydney radio in with TV at North Sydney, but other issues with the TV division put that move on the back-burner, it’s still planned if Nine hold onto the radio, but who knows? Doing that would’ve integrated the TV & Radio much better & more closely than being separated across the city & harbour & would’ve bought the other states closer to the TV division/working, even if their studios weren’t in the same building as the TV.
Nine radio DAB+ is now all played-out of a central data center, I’m not sure how integrated the AM stations are with that yet, but it’s planned, so the tech ops model you mention is well & truly being used in both radio & TV.
Had the Sydney radio studios been moved in with Nine TV at North Sydney the newsrooms would’ve been fully integrated for the radio network, but having separate ones across the harbour makes that a bit harder, but then I’ve just been notified that from the 24th Feb. the Nine Radio Syndication News bulletin will be 30 seconds shorter & the midday News bulletin will be 1 minute shorter, & I imagine that will be the same for the in house Nine Radio stations, so does that mean Nine just can’t find enough news to fill the bulletins or are they putting less focus on Nine radio news now, which is fine for the music stations & plenty of stations that take the Syndicated News, but I would’ve thought that somewhat counter productive for the News/Talk stations?
With no changes listed for program timing, I’d suggest it’s just a way for Nine to fit in another commercial or two per hour.
Nine are fiddling at the edges to save costs, announcements to follow in coming days of programs outside of BMAD being cut or replaced with advertorial content of sorts.
Can you give us any hints of what programs might be cut?
I’m guessing nights and overnights? Move them into a national format? Don’t know how it’ll work with 6PR but they’d make it work one way or another…
Back when Alan Jones was still on and they experimented with networking Sydney overnights to 3AW very briefly, I thought the way a national overnights program could work into Perth would be that Perth joins live at 10pm local time (midnight AEST / 1am AEDT) all year round and stays with 2GB’s feed until 5:30am local time (7:30am AEST / 8:30am AEDT) thereby ensuring they’d get the main AJ editorial and interview of the morning all year round.
While Alan’s show often focused on national politics (and if networked live to Perth it would’ve been crucial to keep those earlier hours nationally-focused), Ben Fordham is too Sydney-centric to be able to be beamed into Perth. Having your national overnight show end at 2:30am Perth time in the summer isn’t very helpful. Hightlights and infomercial content could fill some of the gap to breakfast I suppose, but in that case I wouldn’t want to start live and local programming any later than 5am or the early-risers will go elsewhere.

Phil O’Neil made his 2GB debut with John Stankey during the 8pm hour last Wednesday night
And not one mention of a thanks in the media release to Olympia Kwitowski who proved herself to be a more than competent broadcaster in the 18mths on air.
Clear evolution of her talent. Very organised person considering producers were either too busy on the now also axed weekend mornings or were plain lazy and incompetent. Olympia organised her own programs, securing talent and going far beyond what any BMAD talent would know where to start with.
So much for supporting young talent, female talent. Poor form Nine.
Remember, Nine is a sausage fest. Can’t have people without a sausage getting in on the fun.
