A legend in radio. I always remember growing up and listening to him and Bruce, always something I looked forward and they were so nice. Rest in peace.
3AW broadcasting icon Philip Brady OAM passes away
Broadcasting icon Phil Brady OAM has passed away, aged 85.
Brady, who has delighted 3AW listeners for decades, has most recently been co-host of the much-loved Remember When program alongside Simon Owens.
Previously, he shared a legendary on-air partnership with Bruce Mansfield across Remember When and Nightline on 3AW.
3AW Station Manager Stephen Beers said “Phil was a great friend to many, truly loving his work on air and helping so many listeners and colleagues with advice, companionship and friendship. Phil will be greatly missed by all at 3AW.”
Originally, Philip was hired as a booth announcer by Channel Nine in 1958, but quickly became one of Graham Kennedy’s ensemble.
In the 1960s and 1970s he hosted a large number of television game shows such as Concentration, Everybody’s Talking, Moneymakers, Junior Moneymakers, Casino Ten, Get the Message and Password.
Philip’s first stint at 3AW began in the 1970s where he was the weekend music man. On December 23 1990, Philip returned to 3AW where he began hosting Remember When with Bruce Mansfield.
The duo then took over the weeknight program Nightline in 1991, with Phil becoming a much-loved part of the program until it ended in late 2019.
Phil continued to appear on Remember When until January 12 2025, announcing his retirement from radio on February 2.
Very sad but not completely shocked after the way he suddenly stepped down from his role.
Simon Owens will join Tom after the 11am news.
I believe there will be a very special edition of Remenber When this Sunday at 9pm delicated to the memory of Phil Brady on 3aw
Simon Owens problay confirm this soon
This explains why Phlip Brady could not co host Carols by Candlelight at the Myer Music Bowl last year
Philp Brady told 2 people that he was dying on 2nd December. Peter Ford and Simon Owens. He told them to keep it a secret
Vale Phil Brady
Bruce Mansfield and Phillip Brady dominated Melbourne airwaves at nights for most of the past three decades. The passing of Bruce in 2016, and Phil this morning, ends an amazing chapter in Melbourne radio broadcast history.
Vale Phil.
A very sad day for broadcasting in this country. He was the last of his kind. The best.
Gold 104 drive host Dave “Higgo” Higgins posted on X this morning…
About a month ago, I answered a call whilst on air. A man, who didn't identify himself, asked me if I knew Philip Brady. I never met Phil, but of course I know who he is. Our house growing up was an AM household, and Phil was always there. 3AW, 3KZ, 3UZ..

..when he joined 3AW with Bruce Mansfield, our house was listening.

This unidentified caller proceeded to inform me that Phil 'wasn't well'. I could hear the sadness in his voice over the phone,..
...So to that caller, Phil's family, friends, listeners, and to everyone at 3AW, my deepest condolences. We say goodbye to a pioneer and legend. pic.twitter.com/HHfTMW5Jq7

Many tributes across media today, saw this nice one online from FM broadcaster “Higgo”, thought it echoed a lot of others (his middle post):

Unbelievable! It’s Johnson’s post above mine. Freakish.
Philip died of Cancer and Andrew McLaren is the new permentant co host of 3aw Remeber When
Both of which have already been mentioned in this thread earlier and Andrew was announced last week.
It was good that despite his poor health, Phil was still able to work the Christmas Night and New Years Eve shifts just a few weeks ago.
Was great to hear Phil (& Simon) speak to some of the 3AW favourites on those two shows for one final time, such as Patti Newton, Donna Demaio, Bianca, David Mann etc.
Simon has written a tribute in The Age, paying tribute to Phil.
3AW not taking calls from listeners for the first Remember When since Philip passed away.
Messages and memories being shared by colleagues and friends in the industry including Denise Drysdale, Glenn Robbins, Brian Mannix, Tony Martin, Peter Hitchener, Steve Vizard, Jane Kennedy, Greg Evans, Mick Molloy and Daryl Somers so far.
The first couple of minutes of the first Remember When program with Bruce and Phil from 1990 was also played.
Simon Owens strongly recounted Phil’s final months and days for listeners at the start of the show with Andrew McLaren and Kevin Trask.
The full recount of what Simon shared on-air he has also posted online. Very moving, and shows how strong of a friendship they really had both on and off-air.
It was a very fitting tribute for Phil last night. Well done to Simon Owens for putting it together.
Here is the podcast which contains all the messages that were played. It was a nice surprise to hear from Dee Dee who had a lovely tribute.
Australian
Buyers lining up for Nine Radio, but is parent company selling?
The continuing uncertainty surrounding Nine Entertainment’s leadership is hampering the media company’s moves to offload its audio business, with potential buyers expressing doubt about whether the sale will proceed.
With assets including the country’s two most popular talkback radio stations, 2GB and 3AW, the possible sale of Nine Radio has been the subject of months of industry chatter.
The speculation intensified last month when the company’s interim chief executive, Matt Stanton, spoke of the need to streamline the organisation’s assets.
But The Australian has been told the drawn-out process to appoint Nine’s next CEO has stymied discussions.
I can’t imagine anyone outside of Liberal party sycophants wanting to buy Nine Radio. They won’t get their asking price.
Nine have really failed in trying to align the television side with the radio and newspapers - the radio side keep promoting their rivals in the Tele. Ideally, the radio side should be praising and cross promoting the Herald (and the Age I guess) as much as possible.
They do advertise the print media and Channel Nine shows as well but the stations need to be seen as being independent and one thing that each arm can be critical of others rather sweeping it under the rug.
If this is true, what a great opportunity for Capital Radio Network to expand into the major markets of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, on top of Perth and Canberra.
An AM talk network, 60s and Hot AC on DAB in all 5 markets.
They’re not independent of each other. Not while Nine is used as the name of the network and parent company, and indeed while NEC own them.
Every rime I’ve tuned in, I hear nothing but “The Telegraph says is” or “The Telegraph said that”. Maybe I’m missing said plugs, but you don’t want your biggest rival getting free advertising.
