Full day coverage with replays during the daytime hours on linear TV. Most comprehensive Olympic coverage outside Sydney 2000.
Clearly they don’t give a stuff about regional listeners, or anyone in SA, NT, ACT and TAS - Nine should be condemned especially for blocking the ABC - the national broadcaster (despite whatever Nine claims about being Australia’s network) from being able to fill this void.
Interesting they are getting prime hosting slots, while Tony Jones is pushed to being a sideline reporter.
Either way, personally I still think Nine aren’t going to deliver to the standards we saw on Seven (especially with Sydney 2000), but so far it looks promising.
BTW @TV.Cynic is there anyway you can post a video that swimming promo from last night?
I would’ve liked to see who is actually going to be in Paris to call and who will be doing it via a tv screen in Sydney.
There should be a table that shows who is play by play and how is an analyst.
Who is doing pbp for the Hockey?
Matt Hill doing the rowing again should be good. Let’s hope he’s in Paris to call from the venue.
Loving the details about the state of the art studio with augmented reality and the self proclaimed best set ever for an Australian audience.
Good to see Eddie back in the anchor’s chair to steer the main overnight coverage. Like him or not he’s a consummate professional and synonymous with Nine’s WWOS.
Disappointed that Roz Kelly didn’t get a hosting gig. Not even on 9Gem.
Looks like Brenton Speed will be the go to utility play by play caller, probably doing most events via a monitor from the IBC given the Football will be all over France and would be hard to travel between venues. He’ll be good on the basketball as well.
Overall not a bad package of commentators.
Maybe, like ‘key slots’, but Eddie isn’t really in our ‘prime time’ (highest ratings will no doubt be between 7pm and 10pm, maybe between 4pm and 6pm too is there’s an Australian gold medal or major moment being replayed).
IMO James Bracey, Allison Langdon and Sylvia Jeffreys have the best slots.
Biggest losers in that sense are Eddie McGuire, Nick McArdle, Tony Jones, Roz Kelly, Emma Lawrence and Matthew Pavlich.
But Karl Stefanovic, Sarah Abo, Todd Woodbridge, Sam McClure, Leila McKinnon and Dylan Alcott have fairly decent slots, will have some good viewership.
Not to mention the basketball group stage being in Lille (actually in a football stadium, bizarrely enough).
Hell will freeze over before Nine gives away that information. I’ve only skimmed through the press kit but it doesn’t look like it’s been mentioned at all.
Based on the above, I think we can say Peter Psaltis will not be travelling to Paris. I’m sure someone at News or The Daily Mail are already on to it.
Who’s commentating the opening ceremony?
The Pierre Mauory Stadium has actually hosted a range of events other than football, rugby union and concerts thanks to its retractable roof. Basketball is just one of its many talents: including tennis (Davis Cup ties) and handball (which it will also host at the upcoming games).
The great Phil Liggett doing Nine’s Olympic coverage for cycling events
If you look above I made a list of everyone based on the media kit that was linked. The full media kit shows how’s doing which sport and it’s easy to deduce who’s the caller and who’s the expert
Will Davies is doing the hockey pbp
Yes I saw that and thank you. I would like a more accurate one so we know for sure. Your efforts are commendable and we are grateful.
Looks like he ain’t doing play by play for the track cycling. They’re going again for former cyclist Scott Mcgrory in that role like seven did. It actually detracts from the event not being an experienced caller. Lacks the pizazz and energy of a Liggett call from the velodrome.
Looks like Phil only doing the road events.
The media kit does have what sport everyone is doing so it’s all in the media kit
Quite possible those in Paris will also be calling off tube at the IBC, anyway.
If anyone, you’d think/hope the swimming (Thompson and Thorpey) and athletics (Whateley and Manou) would be from the venues, but apparently there’s only a certain amount of media positions there and they’re hard to get
He’s been doing it for many Olympics now and IMO he’s actually really good, his calls seem natural and often quite exciting
–
Hope veteran Liz Chetkovic will be calling the gymnastics once again, believe she calls for the world feed/OBS though.
Do we know if any Seven/ex-Seven crew have been seconded by the IOC OBS and/or poached by Nine Wwos? IIRC they did for Athens and Beijing maybe even London, Rio and Tokyo to help produce the swimming footage and Seven also won awards in the 2000s.
Sorry yes, I should have said ‘some of’.
I imagine swimming and TnF they would be at venue.
My understanding is you have to book positions and these cannot always be guaranteed.
This is the bare minimum for an Australian broadcaster. What normally happens is that rights holders can request what aspects they would like at each venue. So it might be commentary positions, hosting points, mixed zone/interview areas.
By and large most sports will call off tube at the IBC but at leas they’re in Paris and have been walking the streets and feeling the vibe of games and can still give a sense of broader context.
Yes I read that but they don’t specifically state if they are an analyst or a play by play caller. It seems ambiguous in parts.
Maybe this explains Roz
She’s still heading to Paris. Seems like she’ll be a rover at the various venues and doing interviews and telling the stories of u breakout performances from around Paris. E.g if an event is being called off tube but there’s an Australian in contention she can shoot down to the venue to do a live cross or interview. It’s still a good role despite not being as high profile. At least she’ll be in Paris.
Yep - exactly this.
Of course, NBC gets what it wants from what I hear which should not be a surprise to anyone.
