Nine Olympic Coverage

I’m not sure about selfish but it is a shame there’s not a tailored radio effort for the Olympics, especially if Nine’s radio plan is obviously simulcasting calls from their TV coverage.

Having said that, the ABC doesn’t have a divine right to broadcast the Olympics and conversely, nor should it break the bank to be allowed to do so.

The ABC’s Aussie Open coverage has always been top notch, JA was fantastic this year with the team and there were some great articles and podcasts also involving his experience and insight

This is the Olympics thread, Sully.

Oh, sorry, I was just trying to point out ABC’s sports radio coverage and agree with Johnson, not quite to that extent, but specific radio calls or coverage of some sort should be a must, especially major national events let alone the biggest of them all in the Olympics and it is a big downgrade if Nine’s radio coverage is very sub-par by comparison. But we’ll see I guess.

Yes, I’ve always enjoyed ABC’s coverage - but again - not sure they should have protected access to Olympics etc.

Also in many regional and remote centres, the ABC is the only source of national sporting coverage on analogue. Also there is no guarantee that FiveAA in Adelaide will take the games, so would mean that most of SA may not get coverage.

Apparently the AOC in the past has been eager for the ABC to have coverage (when the ABC decided not to cover the 2020 games, it was reported that the ACO previously helped cover rights fees), so hopefully they helped the ABC.

If the ABC and Nine don’t come to an agreement for the 2032 games then Nine should be condemned by the international media, the government, and the public. Next Nine will try and get the AFL/NRL rights exclusively from the ABC.

Nine Entertainment is announcing its half year results in the next few days. I hope it will be able to divulge some more details of the network’s coverage of Paris Olympics.

I believe the radio broadcast should utilise the talent across all four of Nine’s metro stations, plus access to commentary on all events (Nine and world feed), and not just a straight simulcast of Nine’s main channel coverage.

According to the Herald Sun, after missing out on Bruce McAvaney, Channel 9 are hoping to lure Gerard Whateley to call athletics at the Paris Olympics.

I don’t think 7 would have let Bruce go to 9 for the Olympics

However I think Seven may let Bruce to go to Paris to call events for the world feed if he is invited by the Olympic Broadcasting Service. When Nine and Foxtel had the rights to London 2012 Olympics, Bruce commentated swimming events with Nicole Livingstone for OBS.

Probably since it’s not to their competitor

Is that what they said? Really? Like he was ever up for grabs anyway. Surely he’d still have a watertight network contract, despite his gradually reduced load since 2017? I suppose couldn’t hurt Nine at least making a phone call, inquiring and wishful thinking.

I can see Nine maybe hoping Seven would loan him to them to allow him to have a final Olympics on a high. But unfortunately just not in the nature of Aussie broadcasters.

If it’s for the world feed then 7 would probably be ok but since it’s to their main competitor they would say no

Could it also have been Bruce himself? Perhaps saying “no”, putting his employer over an Olympics call. He is very loyal to Seven and not the first time it’s been reported over his many years that a rival at one time or another has tried to go after his services. Not the only Seven employee either.

Possibly. Although I think any notion of loyalty would still be attached to him if he was ‘loaned’ to 9.

Hopefully he’s on the world feed since that is likely how i’ll be following assuming Nine offers the world feed like Seven did.

In 2012 when Fox & 9 has the Olympics, Bruce did the world feed swimming, so if he’s asked this time, I assume he might do it

Not sure if there is any racing on Seven in July, so he’s probably got some free time to do the world feed.
