Regional TAM defines the whole Shepparton/Goulburn Valley market (not just the main township of Shepparton) as 175,200 in population, and 189,700 for Albury-Wodonga/North East.

I really wish they’d get rid of the stupid floating 9 NEWS Logo and the random white and blue bits and just put the photo/backdrop as the full background, would look so much better, then they can just put the images over the top for the current story.

Aaaaand??? What about it? What happened?

Don’t leave us hanging

Illawarra bulletin hit by those Nine playout gremlins tonight with a still image from the Burwood train hatch explosion story popping up part way through the weather segment and remaining on screen for 35 seconds. Viewers missed out on some details but at least the segment resumed in time for the seven day forecast.

They probably didn’t want to use something that was too Albury looking or too Shepparton looking, so have gone for something generic.

I’m no good at montages, so here’s the whole bulletin from Nine’s Border North East (Albury/Shepparton) premiere to fast forward through.

Keen to hear your analysis, Media Spy!

I agree partly. However, 7 News with Mark Ferguson is the Sydney local news - it’s not a statewide bulletin. They don’t have live crosses to Albury or Coffs Harbour regularly to cover events of the day there. If it were a true “State” bulletin, they wouldn’t run stories about Sydney trains being full or where to find Sydney’s cheapest bananas.

Peter Hitchener’s V/O has so much authority. I feel like his voice gives the audiences an impression of ‘Now your well-deserved local news is here with Jo Hall’, which helps the people to think that Hitch has complete confidence in handing over the baton to Jo. Best newsman on TV IMO.

Imagine if they used Peter Overton’s V/O for the SNSW bulletins, would be much better I think.

Viewers respond well when they get what they are promised - and believe me, there is nothing a Canberran hates more than Sydneysiders telling them the way things are.

Watching a bulletin from Wollongong is a slightly less bitter pill to swallow, and you don’t get Illawarra or Bathurst stories ‘thrown in’ to make up the half hour on WIN.

In Canberra, people tuning in to 7 News know they are watching the Sydney news. There’s no silly graphic of parliament house or whatever to appear local. Viewers seem to be happy then to migrate to ABC to watch a bulletin created by Canberrans for Canberrans.

If I were Nine, I’d be getting some qual data on viewers who currently watch 7 and find out why they haven’t swtiched to Nine. I’ll bet penny to a pound it’s the presentation that’s at fault. Mark has gravitas, there’s not denying that!

Knowing Nine Sydney, they’d probably use Peter Harvey for the Southern NSW/ACT bulletin Openers if they could. But as we all know, Harves’ trip down from heaven is unfortunately cost prohibitive for the network!

Matthew O’Sullivan is fine for the Southern NSW/ACT Openers IMO since he is the current voice of Nine News nationally. Peter Overton is a newsreader and occasional reporter for 60 Minutes, not a voiceover guy.

Unless we’re talking about someone like Hendo or even Kenny (much loved and iconic presenters who were an integral part of Nine’s news brand in Sydney/NSW for decades), leave the Openers to the professional voiceover people please Nine!

My thoughts: its great to finally have some change/competition, but there’s room for improvement.

I streamed the Melbourne bulletin simultaneously and their top story was the thunderstorm warnings issued across Victoria - oddly, this didn’t get a single mention on the local edition.

It still seemed a little disjointed having a random mix of local, national & international stories, having been used to Nine News Melbourne and WIN’s separate 30-minutes of local news for so long. I still believe they should have kept the slick metro bulletins and added a local breakaway window, making it easier for viewers to plan their viewing (know they’d get the top stories at 6pm while 6:30pm for example would always be local news - same time, every night). Take tonight’s sport segment for example; the top stories are grouped together followed by a transition into the three local sport stories.

I still believe there is an imbalance between the Albury-Shepparton combination - no sport at all for the Goulburn Valley (all the Cricket Shepparton grand finals were missed, WIN had full reports), although amateur water polo in Wodonga received coverage. Early days though, hoping this improves with time especially with footy season just around the corner.

There were a few noticeable glitches too - the abrupt transition with the fuel price segment @ 10:40 and also the big pause at the end of the weather report @ 43:40 stood out to me.

All in all, it’s the little things like all the metro live crosses & the state-of-the-art set which all make up ‘Nine News’ I’ll miss the most, but otherwise it’s a decent effort and I’m looking forward to the minor adjustments they’re yet to make as the product evolves.

That backdrop is so ugly. Seriously? They expect people to look at that for an hour?

The Bendigo and Ballarat backdrops look quite good - this is terrible. It’s just ugly - a rusty rural bridge?

I realise there are other cities like Shepparton in the viewing area - but Albury-Wodonga is by far the dominant one.

Wouldn’t a backdrop like one of these look better? You could go with Albury Skyline or a generic image form the area.

I prefer full bulletins anyway. Thanks.
