Nine News Local

Is the Queensland regional 9 news bulletins still on track for a July 3 launch or has it been delayed again? I haven’t heard any more despite my dad in Ayr asking me when the North Queensland bulletin would launch.

Jonald Trump?

They’ve finally removed that “First & Best” slogan I see.

Re, the new promos: What works for an established metropolitan news service which has had over six decades to gain the trust of viewers doesn’t necessarily work for a regional news service which has been running for only a few months.

Completely agree. Even having the VO saying the local city would go a long way. No real sense of local branding.

Exactly! Glad they got rid of it.

Someone forgot to tell the outdoor advertising team

I still find it weird seeing 9 being advertised in Canberra, growing up there with WIN

A Current Affair is “Canberra’s No.1” what?

Your guess is as good as mine

I thought ABC News was Canberra’s No. 1 at 7pm.

ACA’s usual qualifier is “Number 1 nightly current affairs program”.

I don’t see why Nine couldn’t use a keyed local backdrop with this graphic addition for their regional news.

Then for the wide shot with the sports presenter, use the graphics on both sides of the screen.

Then for quick market-wide updates, they could use something like the early news (prevents them accidentally using the wrong local backdrop).

There’s nothing wrong with the set that they have, it’s just that the current backdrop limits what they can do that looks normal.

I personally think that Nine are waiting a year or two to see how the regional bulletins go. If they flop, then there is no harm done, whereas if after a year or two, viewers have been tuning in, they will actually invest into a proper news set for all (or a subset) of markets.

With a relatively small backdrop screen, I’m not sure if Nine can do all that much more with the backdrops than what they’re doing now without having to run a more generic look.

I’m pretty sure a large media company like Nine wouldn’t decide to launch new regional bulletins (including the poaching of talent from existing regional newsrooms, etc.) just to see how they go over a year or two.

With most networks (Nine included) wanting the reach rules to be dumped, Nine probably wants to show ACMA and the government that it’s a good corporate citizen by producing local news services for areas it currently has no broadcast licences in. It’s also worth remembering that the regional newsrooms also help provide additional content for the capital city/statewide and national editions of Nine News.

I meant in terms of a set. They wouldn’t want to go all-out with regional sets just for the bulletins to flop.

Nine might be producing them but as far as ACMA is concerned they are broadcast by SC9 and that’s all that matters. I don’t see that there is any corporate altruism involved; Nine is producing these because that was part of the agreement with SCA to get higher affiliate fees.

All I’m talking about is a new backdrop shown on the green screen, the set itself is fine at the moment. Nine have already developed the templates that I screencapped, they just need to add them to the local backdrops to be transposed on the green screen. It’s a simple, no-cost change.

As for the market-wide updates, they can just put the generic backdrop on the screen. Not having to worry about green screen for updates is even more time effective.
