…so how are they going to make revenue for the station and network to keep such an operation afloat with no ad breaks? ![]()
and 6pm is arguably more attractive to advertisers? More $$$!
Just have them running outside of the 6pm hour. There are other programs for advertisers to put their ads on, Tipping Point AU, Today Show, primetime programming, etc. There’s other areas of ad revenue, and you’ve even got the multichannels for that too. So ad breaks are still there, just not at 6pm. And honestly, if that means making way for 9News Darwin during ad breaks, that would be amazing.
Problem is, less attractive on Nine at 6pm now that Queensland news takes the space. I’d imagine at the moment ex-SCA 7 in Darwin is getting a fair better amount of ad revenue than Nine. Or heck, try 10 Darwin. Solid ad revenue there. So, advertisers aren’t constrained to 1 channel, they have options.

What the hell are you smoking???

And @Techster, I would give you a heart but I already ran out from 7 TAS!
Well, I don’t know! ![]()
I ran out of those too! Too much likes and reactions on the 7Tas posts! ![]()
You say that as if they only run ads during the 6pm news and at no other time of day. What you are suggesting is that a station already struggling financially should turn off their revenue stream for what is likely their most watched program of the night. Congratulations, you have probably killed off any chance that Nine has in having a local presence in Darwin permanently.
All of which are less attractive, bring in less revenue for the station, and are not new streams of revenue.
“Don’t worry, if you don’t like losing your prime advertising spot during the news, you can just take your money elsewhere!”
Pretty much sums up your entire post.
Did you read my post? I clearly meant run ads on 9HD Darwin for 23 hours/day, that’s all the time except between 6pm-7pm when the Queensland news is on.
The most watched program? Which is now ABC News Darwin (since 9News Darwin was axed), even if it means viewers have to wait until 7pm. They’re not a commercial broadcaster but they’re getting the lost viewers from 9News Darwin, and they’re winning now. The ABC is certainly reaping the rewards big time, they’re now the NT’s one-stop shop for local news. I’d suggest people in the NT are probably tuning out of the news at 6pm now as a result of a loss of NTD Darwin’s local 6pm news.
Thanks for understanding the fact that Nine just simply cannot afford to have a permanent presence in Darwin. I would want them to have a presence there, but in all honesty what I’m saying is a true statement that should be reality: No local 6pm news, no point in NTD existing anymore. Makes no sense to stay in Darwin if there’s no local news bulletin at 6pm. Seeing local advertising on Nine Darwin during the Brisbane news is just alienating, even to the average Darwin viewer.
Without 9News Darwin, either shut down NTD-8 and hand the license for it back to the ACMA (and make viewers in Darwin eligible for VAST), turn it into an Imparja remote relay and Imparja becomes an NT-wide channel + the same reach out to Remote Central/Eastern Australia, or Nine seeks ACMA approval to get Channel 9 Darwin converted into a full-time repeater of QTQ-9 Brisbane without any opt-out advertising.
Whether or not Seven is No.1 in Darwin, at least they provide local news updates during the day and that’s where I reckon all the ad revenue should now be going full stop.
Problem is, there’s no real attractive spot on Nine anymore in terms of news. People in Darwin would only be happy with watching Brisbane stories if Channel 9 Darwin was no more and was turned into a dirty repeater of QTQ-9 Brisbane, just like Channel 7 in Griffith/South East SA under WIN. Nine continuing to operate in Darwin with no local news program at 6pm is not worth it in the long run. Advertisers are slowly moving away from Nine as a result, and there’s a lot more local ad repeats during the ad breaks, probs because there’s shrinking revenue. Less and less businesses are interested in advertising on 9HD Darwin now thanks to a lack of the local 6pm news. At the moment you’re still seeing Darwin ads but soon there’ll be little to none. They’ve killed off all local programming, including news programming. The local feed of Channel 9 Darwin is essentially just on autopilot, waiting until it runs out of fuel, waiting until Nine declares that NTD is no longer commercially viable. Remember, you heard it here first on MS.
I say Nine needs to save their cash and just get out of Darwin altogether. No point in staying there. If the local news isn’t cutting it for Nine, they’re done in the territory. Just hand the license for NTD back to the ACMA and a third-party reactivates the Nine signal, but as QTQ from Brisbane. Would be better than a Channel 9 with local advertising and no local news programming.
Think about it, every single other Nine O&O has a local news bulletin, and Nine Darwin previously did, but now that they don’t, there’s no point in keeping a local version of the channel that just serves as advertising. Nine’s O&O footprint should be in all major cities ex-Darwin. Simple. Let Seven and the ABC focus on the Northern Territory.
Who got rid of my post???
Correct, they do. But the point I am making is that they are already doing it, so there isn’t really more money to be made here. Add in the fact that these spots are FAR less lucrative than during the 6pm news bulletin, and they would be cutting off a major source of revenue by getting rid of ads for local news.
THEIR most watched program (prefaced with probably). If you are going to ask whether people have read your post, best do it yourself.
So the only options should be:
A. Produce a 6PM bulletin, which we both know and agree is unfinancial, or:
B. Shut the station down?
Can I ask, are you from Darwin?
Citation needed.
So just because there is no local news bulletin, Darwin viewers should lose access to Nine’s content, and advertisers should lose a platform to advertise on?
Seriously, can you stop lecturing people in other cities and states about what you think they want and should deserves without providing evidence, and suggesting that your opinion is final - it’s downright rude, offensive, and gaslighting
Yet another person has said something @Radio_TVGuy but you still keep doing the same thing for some reason. And I tried to post something about it but it somehow got deleted???
My head hurts reading some of this……
Please note this is also an opportunity for Nine to develop their online platforms and utilise their 200k+ followers on the 9News Darwin Facebook page & their website to publish content.
That page is more valuable to Nine than you think, and could have some return on investment if it’s done correctly.
In reality, 7.5min of local content is probably what the old news team delivered through their 1 hour bulletin. Nothing is really changing here it’s just done in a different format.
Will this supposed short form resurrection of Nine News Darwin be shown on Imparja?
Over 200,000 followers?
That’s more than the entire population of Darwin… seems a bit odd to me.
Presumably people from other parts of the territory as well?
You should take into account the rest of the NT which gets serviced by Imparja, not big in terms of population but is in terms of it’s footprint. Also Imparja South and North air not just in the NT but Australia wide via VAST on Optus 10.
