Just seems odd why you wouldn’t pad it to 12:15 and run a VT package off the back to fill the time on the broadcast if needed.
Definitely not the first time they’ve cut short. No idea why.

For all it’s faults in it’s coverage, at least the ABC sticks with the fireworks till the end.

This is a very common practice for GTV. First few minutes of the Melbourne fireworks and then over to Can’t Stop The Music. This is Nine’s NYE tradition every single year, to broadcast this movie a few minutes after 12am in Melbourne following their broadcast of the City of Melbourne NYE Fireworks. The movie (in Melbourne) went until 2:35am AEDT. That would be 2 hours of the movie, then add on the commercials during the breaks.

Which aren’t all that many cause they only have only one or two ads at that time of night. Then when the movie ended. Straight into infomercials
Australia are unfortunately now out of the United Cup in Sydney, can see Nine moving the scheduled main channel nights to 9Gem now, as will surely draw less interest/ lower audiences.
Though potential now for a promotion for the Brisbane International to the main ch, matches depending.
And the Adelaide International is next week.
Nine could have an encore of Can’t Stop The Music (jks). But seriously, I think Nine will look at which telecast will draw the best numbers - I remember tennis matches with Martina Navratilova and Steffi Graf in the 1980s that could have attracted more of an audience than some of the Aussies at play. Not saying that Nine would choose a match without Aussie competitors for the main channel if matches with Aussies in it were available - but its about the potential viewership based on the viewer interest and the quality of the competition- not where the competitors come from
Don’t give Nine ideas or it’ll be New Year’s Eve all over again!

I was just about to comment about the tennis airing on the Sunday as Day One as a mistake, then realised they started doing so a year ago. For the backlog of games being played by a certain day.
The ratings will be interesting for the Australian Open too - as we will be seeing some high reaches throughout the tournament. The new ratings system began a year ago on Sunday 28 January in time for the Men’s Final.

Turned out a big success too, plus no disruptors being a Sunday such as Home & Away (which Seven now start in Jan intentionally against the AO) & Chase lead-ins for Seven, reality launches or ABC’s top rating Mondays. And gets that momentum rolling with viewers a day before the traditional Monday.
Should be positive for Nine. As you mention being a major ‘event’ sport, across an entire day for 15 days in a row (similar to Olympics, Winter Olympics or Comm Games), “reach” should go huge. And in terms of averages, there should be a boost, now adding regional and bvod, even if Nine still prefer and focus on metro, but that had started to become soft after 2020/COVID during the first few days of the Aus Open.
The Australian Open can still draw the occasional 1m+ metro broadcast audience too, outside the two finals. So now with VOZ, it’ll be interesting.

I don’t think this was ever really a chance, they never did it with Hot Seat and if a big name and Aussie were playing in a big match, let alone going down to the wire, they’d face massive public backlash for going to a game show on the main channel, they as all networks do already receive such for the nightly news bulletins!
And it’d just be a ratings / audience retention ploy for 6pm, good decision by Nine. Seven should take a look RE: H&A during Big Bash.
I think Nine would also prefer to savour it for survey and after all the tennis promos come Q1/Married the night after the AO final.
The United Cup (tennis) Final finished at 10.30pm aedt (scheduled for a 11.30pm finish). Nine are now airing 60 Minutes (rpt) in Sydney and Melbourne until normal scheduling begins at 11.30pm.

It’s really good, been enjoying this film on 9 tonight, rare for me these days on CFTA and despite the run time (which is probably the reason I didn’t actively seek it out on streaming the past few years plus Smith’s ‘incident’). Better than I thought it was going to be.
Well directed and acted. Paints a fascinating picture into Serena and Venus’ family dynamics growing up and how their famous careers and lives came to be, including key looks into those around them that helped them along the way, including father, mother, siblings, community, coach and agency.
A nice sort of segue into Sunday too, as well as the exhibitions and the Adel Int’l final.
