20 YEARS OF THE GARDEN GURUS

Celebrating its 20th year on Channel 9, The Garden Gurus , Australia’s longest running gardening program on commercial television, returns for a milestone series this Saturday at 4.30pm on Channel 9 and 9Now.

The program is hosted by horticulturist and landscaper Trevor Cochrane , horticulturist and gardening identity Neville Passmore , horticulturist and blogger Bonnie-Marie Hibbs , and Greenology Landscapes founder and landscaper Nigel Ruck (ex- Backyard Blitz ), who also welcome landscape architect Linda Ross and horticulturist James Barclay . Together, the Gurus will inspire green thumbs of all ages and gardening levels across Australia.

Cochrane, who created The Garden Gurus in 2002, is proud to celebrate this milestone alongside his expert team.

“When Nev and I started this show in 2002 we never dreamed it would be so successful. The chance to bring waterwise garden knowledge to the east coast has evolved into a program that has state-based experts sharing their expert knowledge, inspiring gardeners to get out and give it a go,” he said.

“I feel so privileged to be able to promote the great work the garden industry does in making gardening easier for beginners, more environmentally friendly, and of course being able to show people that we can do something about climate change, together, one backyard at a time.”

In the premiere episode, Trevor and Neville take a special trip down memory lane, looking back at the program’s highlights and presenters over the last two decades – beginning in Perth and spanning over 800 episodes. Later, they give viewers their expert advice on revitalising the garden after what has been a hot, harsh summer.

As the new series progresses from summer through autumn, The Garden Gurus’ incomparable years of experience and know-how will ensure that viewers are equipped each week with the knowledge and confidence to take on any gardening challenge.

The Garden Gurus enjoy seeing viewer garden success stories, and this season, thanks to Sproutwell Greenhouses, viewers have the chance to win a fabulous garden package worth

$10,000. This includes a greenhouse or glasshouse valued at up to $8,000, plus $2,000 worth of garden tools, soils and plants to get started. To enter the draw, simply go to The Garden Gurus website and tell the Gurus in 20 words or less which story over the years of watching the program has inspired you.

This 15-part series of The Garden Gurus will be telecast across Australia on Channel 9. Previous series have been regularly broadcast internationally in 14 languages to 86 countries.

The Garden Gurus is produced by Guru Productions for the 9Network.

i know that there aren’t many primetime lifestyle-garden renovation type shows these days (outside Gardening Australia and i guess Better Homes and Gardens), but i am glad that Garden Gurus is still around in 2022 - even if it is on a Saturday afternoon slot (and the random overnight slot as filler). The show is such a quiet achiever. And am glad it has lasted 20 years.

Nine is not using 9Gem to show the remaining episodes of Australia Behind Bars in Sydney and Brisbane when the new NRL season starts next week. When Footy Classified returns to Wednesday nights in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth, that will be the perfect opportunity to air ABB in Sydney and Brisbane.

Behind Bars was doing very well in Sydney too.

If Nine had an original Monday night drama, they’d have a very well rounded schedule there and I’d commend them for investing in a solid decent night line-up .

Not sure what the following week will look like, but in the previous few years, Nine have had “Footy Classified” air in AFL Cities and “100% Footy” air in NRL cities on Monday nights. But having an original drama air early in the week during the year would be great.

I’d also wondered whether viewers were happy to see Mel Doyle back on their screens, she’s very good at narrating and seems well suited to the genre.

I wonder why they mentioned “10 and Nine” in the press release instead of the numerically ordered “Nine and 10”.

Perhaps 10 initiated the idea of doing a telethon and then approached Nine to see whether they would be interested in getting involved?
