So predicable.

wasn’t sure which thread to put this in

I notice Ch 9 are airing the movie “City Slickers” (1991) on Saturday afternoon.

Now, it got me intrigued, because I recently saw “City Slickers II” (1994) on 7flix.

Upon closer investigation, whilst both were theatrically distributed by Columbia Pictures, the former is digitally/home media distributed (theatrcial & that are two seperate things) by MGM, which Nine have the rights to.

Whereas the latter movie is digitally/home media distributed by Sony, which Seven have the rights to.

How does that even happen!? I don’t get it!? It’s certainly dumb for free-to-air TV, due to what I just explained

NB/
Further to that, MGM home media in Australia is (or was) handled by 20th Century Fox.

Also, both movies were produced by Castle Rock (who after 1994 I believe) have exclusive digital/home media distribution handled by Warner Bros. Which Seven now have rights to, although Nine have kept major films/franchises.

A mess.

As you deduced, it’s simply because MGM owns the original movie and Warner Bros owns the sequel.

Is this the first time a movie released by Universal has a FTA premiere on Nine? Seven ended the output deal with NBC Universal last year.

2 Broke Girls started last week.

The Bible and AD aired on NBC but were not distributed by NBCUniversal. The series are ultimately owned by MGM.

@JohnsonTV Nine have been airing Universal distributed films for a few months now, particularly one’s that have aired on Seven over the past year (e.g.) Mercury Rising (1998)

On a similar note, have Nine got rights to Sony now (Columbia Pictures, etc)? I believe Seven last had a 3 year deal negotiated in 2013?

I notice “Bad Teacher” (2011) is premiering on 9Go! next week.

Aired on Seven (both uncut and cut) a number of times in recent years.

How did this end up back on Nine when they paid to terminate the WB contract last year?

Now that you mention it, I do seem to recall a blogger saying that Nine had ditched it. Not sure if Nine confirmed that at the time though.

Nine of course kept some programming (first picks?)

Harry Potter, new Big Bang, etc?

Yes, Nine apparently (?) confirmed it via a supposed unnamed source, as you recalled.
