Nine Cricket Coverage

Seven is as shallow as they come but $30m + production costs is a lot of money to flush down the toilet in an attempt to spite Nine. MAFS has already produced MKR killing figures and will do so again in 2019 regardless of how things play out in January.

The best option is the one that produces the most value from the rights that Seven holds. Obviously Nine would benefit in any deal that could be struck but there would be benefits for Seven as well. Whether it ends up happening or not, I do think it’s something that both networks will explore.

I think’s going to be pretty sad that cricket won’t be on Nine after 40 years. Channel 9 is so embedded in Australian cricketing history ever since Kerry Packer and World Series Cricket that the commentators have become household names and the theme song is a cricketing icon. There many famous cricketing moments where you can remember the commentary and you in a way, associate that moment with the commentary. We probably won’t hear Bill Lawry commentating again and even though Tony Grieg and Richie Benaud aren’t alive anymore, they sort of lived on through the coverage on Channel 9 by the present commentators and their frequent references to them. That won’t be the case anymore.

I just wonder if the “Ritchies” show up again with their Channel 9 branded mics. like they did earlier this year in the Sydney Test, will Channel 7 be showing them on screen?

I daresay the “Ritchies” will be a casualty of this.

Perhaps if Bruce McAvaney ends up hosting the cricket, will they reinvent themselves as the “Brucies”? Hmmmm. Maybe not?

The average viewer probably doesn’t care which channel their favourite sport is on, as long as they can watch it.!

No, but “we”’ Mediaspyers are not exactly your average viewer, the average viewer does not get obsessed with station logos, news sets, themes or graphics

Ritchie’s have come out today and said they will confirmed the tradition. They don’t care who televises Test cricket, Ritchie will live on!

They probably won’t get any coverage on Seven if they use Nine dotted microphones though.

The 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup fixture was released in England overnight. Australia will begin its title defence against Afghanistan at Bristol on June 1. The tournament will revert to the format used in 1992: 10 nations involved, every team will play each other once before the top four advance to the semi-finals. In total, there will be 48 games across 46 days, culminating in the final at Lord’s on July 14.
Australia’s schedule:
v Afghanistan at Bristol, June 1 (D/N)
v West Indies at Trent Bridge, June 6
v India at The Oval, June 9
v Pakistan at Taunton, June 12
v Sri Lanka at The Oval, June 15
v Bangladesh at Trent Bridge, June 20
v England at Lord’s, June 25
v New Zealand at Lord’s, June 29 (D/N)
v South Africa at Old Trafford, July 6 (D/N)

Nine shares the broadcast rights with Fox Sports, although I think Nine will not show every Australian game during the round robin.

I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t unless Nine has agreed for Fox to have more exclusivity.

It’s possible one or two of Australia’s preliminary matches will clash with Nine’s coverage of State of Origin. We won’t find out the dates for next year’s series until later this year.

During the 2018-2022 rights deal, an Origin game will have two games played on a wednesday and one game to be played on a Sunday.
I noticed that the Australia v Pakistan game at County Ground, Taunton will be held on Wednesday 12 Jun 2019. It is likely that All Australian games will be shown on 9Gem (including finals).

A brilliant montage of the 40 years where Channel 9 covered the cricket.

The Sunday Telegraph reports Bill Lawry is set to announce retirement from cricket commentary after Nine lost the Cricket Australia broadcast rights.

Sad to hear.

Had hoped a network might ask him to do even just occasional guest comments for Boxing Day?

Summer of Cricket will never be the same without Bill Lawry.
‘Oh got him, yes he has! It’s all happening at the MCG!’ Bill Lawry has commentated on Tests, ODIs and T20Is for many years. Goodbye and wishing you the best for ur retirement! #ThanksBill

One Day International tour of England

A new era in Australian cricket begins when the One Day International tour of England commences EXCLUSIVELY LIVE and FREE on Nine and 9GEM from Wednesday, June 13, at 9.30pm.

In the first series since the ball-tampering scandal, new coach Justin Langer will take charge of a team of fresh faces against England in a five-game ODI series and one Twenty20 International that begins at The Oval in London.

Led by new captain Tim Paine and vice-captain Aaron Finch, the Aussies will be out for revenge after their series loss in January, and will draw on limited-overs stars Glenn Maxwell and D’Arcy Short, as well as bowlers Nathan Lyon and Josh Hazelwood.

Nine’s Director of Sport, Tom Malone, said: “There is so much interest around this new Australian cricket team. Wide World of Sports is thrilled to be the home of The Ashes, and all of the ICC World Cups for the next five years. These ODIs in England will be crucial in preparation for next year’s World Cup on the same pitches.”

Having recently taken the world No.1 ODI ranking, England will be tough opposition, with captain Eoin Morgan leading a dangerous lineup that includes Joe Root and Ben Stokes.

I assume Nine will take the Sky Sports feed like Fox Sports, which will show all matches in HD.
It will be three huge days of sport in June.
June 16: World Cup (France v Australia on SBS) and cricket (England v Australia on Nine)
June 21: World Cup (Denmark v Australia on SBS) and cricket (England v Australia on 9Gem)
June 24: State of Origin game 2 (Nine) and cricket (England v Australia on 9Gem)

This is where Nine let themselves down with most of the ODIs shafted to 9GEM in SD and it doesn’t bode well for coverage of The Ashes next year where Nine has the exclusive rights.

The first 4 ODIs should air on Nine until 5am then switch to 9GEM. The 5th ODI should switch to Nine after 10:30pm. Is that so hard?
