New Zealand Radio

Mediaworks had issues for a long time
Shame as they do
Have some good brands but
Dont think management know what to do with them
Would be sorry
To see some good staff go
Guess radio in its current form is not viable
In this digital age apart from zb i think
All brands are suffering

Just another comment from meā€¦

MediaWorks has lacked a visionary CEO for some years now. If you ask any MediaWorks staff member from over the last 10 years, they will tell you that not one CEO during that time has excelled or shown a decent future for the company.

Mark Weldon, Michael Anderson, and now Cam Wallaceā€¦ all of them have been underwhelming leaders.

Ingrid Hipkiss still anchoring Newshub. Wonder if Discovery will enforce restraint of trade on her as well.

A thought I had. If Mediaworks is up for sale, could parts of it be sold off to new, local owners? Most of the More FMā€™s were once heritage stations - some of them very famous.
For example, More FM Manawatu could be sold to locals in the area and rebranded to something else. Nelson could revert back to being Fifeshire, Blenheim sold to Marlborough locals and become Sounds FM again, and so on.
Would be better than just networking the whole lot 24 hours a day, and Mediaworks could focus on their outdoor advertising sideline (or something).

Local radio was great
Made you feel part of the community

I doubt that would happen in the forseeableā€¦ very few people in regional areas would be willing to pay what MW would be asking for them, let alone have the interest in running a radio station.

She doesnā€™t officially start till April so Iā€™m guessing it has been in the works for a while.

There was a lot wrong with Magic Talk but on reflection was the overall concept all that bad? Yes It was a half arsed talk offering for all the reasons you mentioned and then some but at least MW obviously realised it couldnā€™t topple ZB and so didnā€™t spend a whole of lot $$ trying. It also felt like it had more of a target audience whereas Today is all over the place.

Tova should be the first to go. A (presumably) large salary for piss-poor ratings.

Ditch today fm
Whatever guise they are using tslk radio doesnt work at all for mw
How many times have they tried and failed

I agree. Itā€™s only going to bleed them dry like RadioLIVE did. And the money they continue pouring into it is going to be at the expense of their more successful brands.

Have a music station like what mix used to be
No announcers but just wall to wall music

What about commercial advertising, news, weather and traffic?

Advertising, news, weather etc (along with IDā€™s/stings) would remain, just no DJā€™s. THere is a case for cutting back the frequency of news bulletins as well.

Magic have gotten rid of DJā€™s between 8 and midnight, and do not have a DJ for their Country Magic show at the moment.

Iā€™ve heard from a reliable source at MediaWorks that staff were advised today about the roles being disestablished and that some staff are preparing to take the company to the ERA/employment court. Watch this space.

Wowee.
Wonder what the grounds would be, because usually these companies are very legally to the letter of the law on redundancies etc. Fixed-term contracts perhaps?

Likely to be as successful as Tova challenging her restraint of trade clause.

Interesting times

Rnz even commented on it
Yesterday and suggested they will still struggle
Even
With the job losses and reduction in staffing
Advertising revenue has dropped dramatically
Post covid

How would RNZ know about advertising revenue lol
