That is a misnomer people seem to keep on parroting, idents and lineups do not impact the amount of advertising that can be carried per hour. It is really due to accelerated flow, same reason that the credits are routinely cut out of the ends of programs, and I am sure networks have used it as an excuse to reduce production/support staff over the years.

Iām one of those that would hang around after the end of a show just to see an ID. Back in the 80s, they looked amazing to me (though not the NBN ones, they were bland by comparison to the Sydney ones) and i never got sick of them.
