As a producer or something behind the camera or on-air?

That is a misnomer people seem to keep on parroting, idents and lineups do not impact the amount of advertising that can be carried per hour. It is really due to accelerated flow, same reason that the credits are routinely cut out of the ends of programs, and I am sure networks have used it as an excuse to reduce production/support staff over the years.

I’m one of those that would hang around after the end of a show just to see an ID. Back in the 80s, they looked amazing to me (though not the NBN ones, they were bland by comparison to the Sydney ones) and i never got sick of them.

Its interesting that Nine/NBN published this on the day that Darwin lost National Nine News Darwin and Nine Gold Coast new was “restructured”. Is this Nine/NBNs way of quashing possible rumours that NBN News will be going shortly?

I think the timing is just a coincidence?

I would have liked to see them include bios on all of their reporters too, not just the presenters.

I visited that page a few months ago. I’m sure it’s not brand new.

NBN needs to do the following;

  • Get the 9now app fixed!!! When I use it the feed defaults to Channel 9 Sydney even though I have Newcastle set in my profile. The only way I can get Newcastle to come up is I have to “swipe up” to close the app and re-open it and then I can get the Newcastle feed… This major blunder will make NBN look less popular than what it should be, and 9Sydney look more popular. This is serious negligence by their IT team. There are TWO things that should tell the app i’m in Newcastle… (1) My profile is set to Newcastle. (2) My GPS location says i’m in Newcastle… yet I keep getting the Sydney feed?

  • In their online videos they need to return the text “Tonight at Six” to keep reminding people when they are on, every time someone sees “tonight at six” it will drill into their head to watch at six. Currently its “Your NBN, Your News” which makes no sense.

  • Natasha Beyersdorf’s reporting from Tamworth on the today show and NBN is world class, it’s a genuine upbeat and very human, similiarly the Facebook promo about her interview with super hubert… they need more of that online instead of the pre package news format which has stuck around since the beginning of TV. This is why TikTok videos are more popular than TV, it has a human element… well done tash (and Jane/Gav who does similiar things on OBs)

  • There needs to be more localisation, stop putting Newcastle content into the Central Coast and other areas and make locals feel like it’s their local news, not Newcastle News

  • On the TODAY show in the mornings, there is a part, around 5:30am which says “We’ll now go to your local weather report…” but on the NBN network it just goes to the ad break. NBN should be pre-recording a weather report the night before, one local to each market (not just a network wide one) that heavily pushes localism and encourages people to watch TONIGHT AT SIX. REMEMBER: The people who run businesses and spend money are up early. Pushing localism and making their own station feel “local” at 5:30am is a big benefit to the station.

  • People have had nbntv.com.au drilled into their head since NBN went on the internet, to have totally disabled that domain without redirecting it is a travesty losing thousands of hits each month

  • At the end of the videos maybe put a promo that says "Advertise on 9, visit nineadmanager.com.au

  • In the “we love it” promos, why is NBN playing Wyee scenes in Newcastle?? or Coffs Harbour scenes? Those “We Love it” promos should play content relevant ot each area. Another opportunity lost. They should spend two days making 30 fillers in Newcastle so each time we see them they are different and LOCAL.

I could go on all day, they are doing such a good job, they just have so many issues that needs to be resolved, specially the 9now issue… channel 9’s bean counters will be looking at NBN’s streaming stats and they’ll be looking crap.

It’s not just me, people keep saying online “it’s just channel 9 sydney now, not even NBN Newcastle”… if these issues are fixed they can turn around public opinion.

I have friends that run businesses and they’d have no idea about advertising on TV, it should be drilled into everyone

I generally agree with most of your post.

Definitely, they seem to forget the station is now more or less called 9NBN, but it’s not even clear what it is (to me anyway - more on that below). I think should state something more generic like “Your Town, Your News” which brings it more or less into line with the metro branding.

So yes, my biggest issue is with holistic branding - it’s not consistent across various platforms… Facebook still seems to be “NBN Television”, website is “Nine NBN”, not sure what they use on X/Twitter, on air is mostly Nine (promos/watermark, ‘We Love It’ IDs) but with NBN branding on 6pm news and ‘Goodnight Big Dog’. Outdoor/external advertising only ever seems to be for ‘NBN News’ (eg signage at Knights games). I would like to see that all be more consistent.

My solution would be for anything locally generated/focussed, it carries a (dotty Nine) / NBN logo (6pm news, ‘We Love It’ IDs, website, Facebook, Twitter/X’, all of that). Anything from the network feed is just straight ‘Nine’ as the rest of the country sees it.

I disagree with this point mostly. Wyee is close to Morisset and Morisset receives the Newcastle feed. Coffs Harbour is one that I could concede on unless they are going to show places like Moree (featuring its artesian baths), Gunnedah, Ballina (and the Big Prawn), Coolah (and the Black Stump) and Forster-Tuncurry (and the singing bridge) to show the diverse region NBN covers

I’ve seen a lot of different regions used in the ‘We Love It’ IDs across their network, not just in Newcastle eg. Armidale on Newcastle/Central Coast, Newcastle on the Taree/Port Macquarie feed etc.

Agree with @sydnet that they would work better if they more locally focussed… I doubt anyone in Newcastle cares whether the 9NBN networks covers Armidale or Port Macquarie or not etc.

I will agree to disagree on that one as I think national advertisers need to know the towns that the networks covers. I think its more relevant that receiving adverts for businesses places like Orange or Wagga

Though I can’t imagine too many local business people in Newcastle who see those IDs would want to advertise in Port Macquarie etc. Most such businesses would be local ones.

Don’t most people know that the news is at 6pm anyway?

Since when has Today had local weather reports?

In Newcastle yes, but in other markets where NBN News trails 7 News, maybe not so much.

My example is probably more the exception than the rule but just before the GST came in, in kate June 2000, my father who lived in Forster asked me to get a shaped piece of glass from Koala Glass in Sandgate. It was possibly a glitch but the Koala Glass ad came on up there with the Koala saying “the people at Koala Glass wanted me to help them sell some more glass”, then threw a house brick and then said “that should help” with the sound of breaking glass in the background

Gosford and the Central Coast are technically part of the Newcastle license area, I mean, if you listen to one of the Gosford FM stations during the ads then you’ll hear some mentions of Newcastle in them.

One simple fix, use a stream link for NBN Newcastle. That should fix your problems. PM me if you want access to it/want to know how to access it.

A while, everytime I listen from 5am onwards, maybe 20 to 30 mins they say “here is your local weather” then on NBN in Newcastle or on the stream it goes to ads.

I often watch 5am news and I’ve never seen or heard that. I’ll have to watch more closely.
