Movies

I don’t think Trump will compensate Disney and Warner Bros if they shut their respective studios in Australia and UK (Leavesden) and move the production back to the US.

Imagine what will happen if countries around the world retaliate and put a tariff on all imported US films and TV shows. China could easily ban them altogether or greatly reduce the quota.

I would rather like Trump demanding China dropping its quota of US movies altogether. AFAIK he is one of very few world leaders standing up against China since the Communist republic was established in 1949.

The studios won’t move the production back to the US. A lot of movies get made in Australia and other countries because governments give the studios a tax break and funding. The studios will just make less movies and TV series so the whole industry will suffer.

When Trump returned to the White House last November, he appointed Jon Voight, Sylvester Stallone and Mel Gibson as US special ambassadors to Hollywood. I wonder if the proposed tariffs plan comes from one of them?

Anyway, it is another example of Trump creating a mentality that is “I may not buy your product, but you must buy MY product because it is made in America, even though it is not of good quality”.

Looking forward to the next James Bond movie coming out of Idaho

Still waiting for the day Bond comes down under

Seems to be some backing away from Trump’s annoucement on movie tariffs. Not that anyone seems to know how to put a tariff on services - movies are made overseas and then shipped back to Hollywood in a can! Much of the post production occurs in the US.

Good. Put him in a big dark room, let him watch all the movies he wants. Imahine the scene from Soylent Green when Sal is watching the movie as he’s passing away.

Let the adults in the room run the country. How can you put a tariff on movies? The only reason I’d give for the movie industry dying is that the movies suck. Especially the big ones. I haven’t been to a Marvel movie in eons.

Tariffs were included in Jon Voight’s proposal.

Ridiculous that the government is taking advice from a swag of people who have no idea on how economics work.

Marvel fans issue ‘spoiler’ complaints as Thunderbolts changes its title days after release

Strange move by the studio to rename the movie to a title which is a spoiler to the ending of the movie. Especially since the movie has done alright at the box office and did not need a boost.

I know they changed The Fantabulous Emancipation Of One Harley Quinn to the new title Birds of Prey but that’s because it flopped hard.

Haven’t seen the movie, but I think Thunderbolts was a more original name

I agree. They should have kept that title for the sequel.

In a March 11 letter, a leaked copy of which has been seen by this masthead, the heads of the major directors guild and crew union in Hollywood, which together represent almost 200,000 filmmakers, urged the administration to act against “a myriad of unfair trade practices” in foreign jurisdictions that they claim had been “impacting the United States’ film industry for decades”.

In the letter – sent to Trump’s trade chief, Jamieson Greer – Russell Hollander, head of the Directors Guild of America, and Matthew D. Loeb, head of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts (IATSE), argued that incentives offered by foreign countries unfairly discriminated against their members.

Industry Entertainment co-founder Dan Spilo has been ousted by the company.

Spilo was dismissed from production of the film “Runner” after an HR investigation for inappropriate behavior that allegedly included bullying and yelling at crew, according to sources. He was sent home from the Queensland, Australia, set last week after the investigation.

Spilo was serving as a producer in “Runner,” in which Ritchson co-stars with Owen Wilson, with Scott Waugh directing. The independent production is written by Tommy White and Miles Hubley from their 2023 Black List script.
