Movies on TV

I have had no amendments thus far

The movie Clue is actually on today at 2pm on SBS2. Ironically, it was already scheduled before Tim Curry’s passing.

Nice to see Nine encoring 9 to 5 just several days after it last aired on 9Gem, some markets on the main channel tonight at 7:30pm including with the same short promo used during TP, news, ACA and Block the other day.

Rated more than 200k, suspect will grab some more tonight and could be one of the highest reach films on FTA this year.

A bit of a TV quirk tonight. 9Go! airing 2014’s Warners Godzilla starring Bryan Cranston, while later 7mate showing 1998’s Sony Godzilla starring Matthew Broderick.

Wow, Oppenheimer gets a FTA airing, soon(-ish) after its theatrical airing. Being a three hour movie, and an 8.30pm start on Seven, I wonder if there will be many ads during its showing.

I don’t think you could call it ‘soon’, considering that it’s over three years since its theatrical premiere, and over a year later than the FTA premiere of the other half of Barbenheimer.

True. I’d say NBC-U held FTA TV window over longer, given its big blockbuster status. Historically this has always been the case, back in the early 2000s and 1990s it was sometimes 3.5 - 4+ years for equivalent titles!

But some FTA premieres in recent years have been aired in under 2 years since release.

For all we know Oppenheimer might’ve had longer exclusivity runs on STV and both 1st and 2nd svod windows, such as Foxtel, Binge or Netflix. 7Plus will also get vod rights too after its first FTA run.

So I think it just depends on the distributor and the nature of a licencing agreement, the specific title, but also network programmers and allocating a timeslot.

9Gem showing an ancient transfer of Bad Boys with Sean Penn at the moment.

It’s in 4:3 and looks like it was transferred from analogue videotape, with very '90s looking interstitial graphics (bumpers).

It looks absolutely shocking. Surely a scheduling/playout mistake @TV.Cynic? I’d have thought internally noted as a “Not To Be Played Before Midnight” file.

Also, EPG had tonight’s 2025 NRL GF replay as “Live”. Involving Storm. Wonder how many casual/non-NRL Melbourne viewers that confused!

And a blank score watermark graphic during ads showing “Roosters | Knights”, clearly meant for tomorrow’s game.

Shocking quality

The official schedule from Nine also has all those replays marked as live.

Yes, very grainy in the darker scenes and something was weird with the frame rate as well - almost like an NTSC telecine converted to PAL and then upscaled to HD

Great movie though!

A quick check and it looks like that old master tape goes all the way back to at least 1991, when it aired on Channel 9 after an episode of Murphy Brown and under old regulations (“AO” and “Modified”) :joy: Must’ve been under a previous distributor and have owned rights in perpetuity, kind of like Crocodile Dundee and Can’t Stop The Music.

As its since been owned/licenced by Studiocanal, last official transfer for Australia was a 2004 DVD via Universal Pictures Video. This was a digitally re-mastered print, PAL, 16:9 transfer and 1.78:1 widescreen aspect (OAR was actually 1.85:1 in cinemas - so Studiocanal opened up the matte as it was shot flat to avoid letterboxing).

Apparently that DVD was sourced from a European digital intermediate, which was uncut, as the film had issues for years in North America being heavily edited. Of note the DVD up-held the R18+ classification but applied it to the current system (“Medium Level Violence, Adult Themes”), so obviously a very graphic movie, even for over 40 years ago. Nine’s classification last night was “MA15+ Strong Violence, Adult Themes, Very Coarse Language”.

It appears to have gone out of print, at least in Australia, officially unavailable everywhere (except Nine LOL). There have been later HD restorations for Blu-Ray releases and in its original aspect overseas too.

You’d think Nine would’ve sourced a new tape decades ago, especially if they’re still playing it today, be it sanctioned or not. Wonder if Studiocanal/Universal even knew Nine had regularly been playing that film? I can recall it’s often been run very late or after midnight on 9Gem for several years now, but just never realised the quality. Ten aired a lot of the Studiocanal movies in the 2000s (T2, etc) when they had the old Universal output, Studiocanal have since licenced themselves and home entertainment has been handled by Sony for over a decade.

Wow. Great research thanks. In that case it could have even originated on 1".

Just imagine the person responsible for transferring this to digital reading our discussion and having a chuckle about people finally noticing their work

I mean, the prepared master file in Nine’s archives/playout might only go back to say early 2000s/peak 4:3 pre-digital/WS/HD period. But yeah I’d be guessing the actual film print is probably that same one they originally got some 35 years ago

Ridiculous. Mainly and the reason we’re discussing this in the first place, because they played it in prime time, still relatively early for a Saturday and on an HD channel, also after a sports telecast replay. You’d expect to see this sort of quality on 9Gem at 2am in the morning or daytime or an SBS m/c in daytime or no longer aired at all.
