F1 delayed publication of its 2027 schedule while considering how the situation could affect next season, with (CEO Stefano) Domenicali previously making clear the championship would release its preferred 24-race plan while retaining contingency options.

Should conditions remain unstable and Bahrain and Saudi Arabia prove unable to host the opening rounds, several alternatives have been discussed.

China has emerged as the leading candidate to open the season, potentially followed immediately by Japan, although bringing Australia forward to reclaim the opening slot has not been entirely ruled out.

Such a move would be complicated by the ongoing redevelopment of the Albert Park pit building, although work at the site earlier this year was running ahead of schedule.

If China and Japan ultimately form the opening leg of a revised calendar, Australia would be expected to retain its existing position as the third round of the season.

Saudi Arabia dropped from WRC as Sardinia becomes 2026 finale

Rally Saudi Arabia has been removed from the 2026 FIA World Rally Championship, with Rally Italia Sardegna now set to decide the season from 1 to 4 October.

The FIA and WRC Promoter confirmed the change after ongoing regional developments created uncertainty around the logistical arrangements required to stage the WRC round in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia had been scheduled to host the WRC finale from 12 to 15 November.

The event itself has not been cancelled, with Rally Saudi Arabia still scheduled to run on those dates as a round of the FIA Middle East Rally Championship.

Fortescue Zero join Formula E

Andrew Forrest’s Australian mining giant Fortescue has revealed plans to compete in Formula 1’s all-electric rival series, Formula E.

The deal is an expansion of Fortescue’s involvement in the sport through its decarbonisation program, Fortescue Zero, which has been the sport’s battery provider.

A mining company may seem like an unlikely candidate for such a project but billionaire Fortescue owner ‘Twiggy’ Forrest has invested heavily in Fortescue Zero to promote decarbonisation as a priority for the industry.

Forrest’s expansion into Formula E, continues his portfolio of sporting interests, which includes ownership of the Western Force rugby union team and Super Netball outfit West Coast Fever.

His green energy company Squadron Energy is also the major sponsor of NRL wooden spooners the St George Illawarra Dragons, in a long-term multi-million dollar deal.

Formula 1 has approved a 15 kilometre reduction in official race distances starting next season.

The change means the total distance will be cut from 305 to 290 kilometres.

To better handle rain delays and red flags, the commission has also abolished the strict three-hour overall event cap.

While the two-hour maximum of active racing time remains, the change gives organisers flexibility to complete full race distances.

Fans travelling to Bathurst 1000 next week have been asked to allow for extra time, due to the twin impact of the continuing closure of Victoria Pass on Great Western Highway, and also trackwork on T1 train line between Parramatta and Olympic Park next weekend, meaning trains will only run between Bathurst and Blacktown on both Saturday and Sunday.

Heh, that’s gonna be fun for those travelling. Especially when it comes to all the train trackwork being done in NSW.

FYI heads up tomorrow:

The Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia is at 6:00pm AEDT. The NRL Grand Final kicks off at 7:30pm AEDT. The race is expected to finish minutes after GF kick-off.

For the first time in 2026, Max Verstappen starts on pole at Sepang.

Delayed start to the Bahrain in Malaysia race due to thunderstorms

Russell’s car frozen likely due to power unit failure. But in any case, the title race is all but wrapped up.

Verstappen converted his pole position to victory in Sepang. Antonelli was second and Hamilton third. Piastri finished sixth.

Was bizarre and brilliant race all at the same time. Good to see Verstappen win for the first time this season and another failure for Russell is great news!

Get ready. It’s race week at Bathurst.
