Seven has a narrow win on Monday as the new season of Big Brother launched.

In somewhat of a reset to the reality scene ABC’s Australian Story plus 7.30 beats all three commercial offerings. LEGO Masters was second in the timeslot but shed 50k from last week to its lowest Monday of the season. MasterChef was a surprise beneficiary of the new line-up improving 65,000 to its highest rating since the launch episode.

Big Brother landed fourth and just 14th for the night. The audience for the 2 hour premiere was well below last year’s launch that was broken into three segments of 664k (arrival), 662k (program) and 650k (eviction). In 2020 the numbers were 853k, 862k and 931k.

In the key demos all shows were competitive with LEGO ahead in 16-39 and 25-54 while Big Brother topped 18-49.

Meanwhile some good results for 6pm news – Seven Melbourne over 300k a stand out. Also on Seven, Home and Away had its best result since early March.

For ABC, Australian Story was at a season high, over 600k for the first time this year while Four Corners was also a season high.

Time for new ideas on Aussie TV. I know the nostalgia factor plays a role in commissioning (and it has its place) but it is really a 1 season curiosity factor (may 2 seasons if you’re lucky) before it crashes. Even Masterchef, after so many seasons it just cannot hope to get much than it is getting, even if it is expertly produced. 14 years is a long time to keep an audience.

Definitely a boilover with the Bon Scott episode of Australian Story winning its timeslot.

Disappointing figures for the return of Big Brother. Doesn’t bode well for the rest of the season when it has to come up against Celebrity Apprentice and MasterChef.

Bad figures for Big Brother, coming 4th on launch night.

Looks like 7 need a new tentpole format. They have killed the BB franchise now.

No innovation and the length of the episode is fatigue inducing.

People would have expected a closer to original format that the audience grew up with. 2 hours of a show that is manipulated and so incredibly staged doesn’t fly with the “nostalgia”

You know they’ll most likely try and grab something else that Nine or 10 have dumped or will dump later this year. After all they don’t like shopping for real new formats.

Consolation prize for Seven is that Big Brother is at least somewhat competitive in the demos which is better than some of their other shows like SAS or DWTS but that’s about it for the positives.

how about commissioning some new exciting formats? No wonder no one is watching FTA anymore… same old crap year after year

Seven won all markets except Sydney that was won by Nine.

Outside the top 20 included a premiere movie, once again not working in prime time slots early in the week.

Even though the numbers aren’t the best, it’s still beating the (3rd incarnation) of the show it initially replaced which is impressive.

A concern for Seven, but I guess 7plus figures would be high

Exactly.
Big Brother is what started Australia’s obsession with reality tv. Maybe, just maybe, after 21 years we’re ready to try something new. Especially when said show has been on all three commercial channels.

Seven’s pre-packaged version is not really the same show. The show was huge event television in its initial run on Ten because it was live and unpredictable. Viewers could tune into the live streams in real time 24/7 and really get to know the housemates. In Seven’s version we get a minute or two of each housemate (some even less) before they are nominated and evicted. What’s the point?

The issue though is networks are not only reluctant about doing event television these days but don’t know how to properly do it.
