How did Seven primary beat Nine primary channel?
Where’s 20 to 1?

Also note that GEM is now on HD, not sure whether it’ll attract the same eyeballs if it was only on SD.

Ratings article includes numbers for shows outside the top 20.

Ratings: Nine Network dominates Monday TV ratings as Australia wins first test.

I thought the theory was more people watching on the main channel.

Would The Ashes have rated more than 760k if it was on the main channel last night? I think yes but The Block is also premium so Nine has the right idea. I would still have The Ashes moved to main channel after 10pm.

Probably because AGT was only 200k behind and The Rookie performed quite well for 7.

Still though, it’s not a first. It also shows the power of a multichannel if you don’t use it as a dump and unload channel to scrape an extra 2% to try stay ahead of competing networks.

Looking at Mediaweek I see that in regional areas 9Gem was only just behind the Nine main channel and combined Nine beat Seven by a couple of percent. So in SD (and HD in NNSW) 9Gem did ok.

10 (aka WIN) got pulverised.

While Littlegezzy is proven correctly to an extent, AFL ratings in Perth have never been as high as 2000s when on the main channels of Seven, Nine and 10.
Regularly would do 150-175k, heaps of 200k+.
Struggles to do 100k on 7mate on a Friday night now, even West Coast games barely get 150k sometimes.

Pretty hard to compare 2010s figures with 2000s figures given the changes in the landscape - Foxtel, streaming, and the overall decline of free-to-air for one thing.

Why? I would agree if 9GEM was not in HD, but given 9GEM is now in HD, having a channel change in the middle of the game is not going to provide any benefit at all other than propping up main channel shares and taking away from 9GEM’s and risks annoying people already watching. Given the total network share is what is more important there is no reason to switch.

There’s a lot less competition in Summer that leaves Cricket as pretty much the only thing worth watching.

On a side note, I think the Cricket has a largely male audience and I think that’s why the other reality shows weren’t affected as much. Also may explain why despite the Ashes rating higher, Nine’s network share was lower than Sunday’s.

…and the NRL, who’s FTA ratings have been suffering ever since Fox Sports/League got the rights to show their own coverage of all matches on Nine except for the anti-siphoning protected State of Origin & NRL Grand Final.

Exactly. Would 9Gem have received a 17% share if they had their regular programming on last night? I highly doubt it.

The constant channel changes on the “Channels of Seven” is extremely annoying.

Seven are the worst with channel changes - not only having to make the channel change in your own time zone, but then having to hear the announcements for channel changes for the other time zones.

Fair enough.

That doesn’t detract from my point though which is to claim that the only way a network can pull big numbers for sports events is if they hold the rights exclusively (as NewsWeary did) is wrong (or if you want to put it bluntly, factually incorrect)
