Nine’s winning streak continued with the launch of Married At First Sight helping the network to a +30% share in the 5 cities plus in all markets except Perth. Nine also won the key demos with 10 well ahead of Seven in second place.

In the 7.30 reality battle MAFS was the run away winner with 1.15 million with Survivor All Stars second. My Kitchen Rules recovered from Sunday’s low but only slightly and in key demo 25-54 ranked 11th.

MAFS launched Monday 4 Feb 2019 with 1,006,000 up against MKR 819,000 and I’m A Celebrity 665,000. On that night Nine and Seven both had 30.1% shares while 10 had 15.9%. The last Survivor season launched on a Wednesday to 809,000.

Midia Watch topped ABC’s returning programs with Q and A making a rare entry in the top 20.

A huge start to MAFS. Given it’s a show that normally gains momentum as the season progresses (due to the water cooler talk factor) that is big. MKR didin’t improve much on the second night.

Survivor did OK but I’m guessing Ten would have hoped for more. I thought it would get closer to 800k. The launch is below what most normal episodes of Celeb were getting. I had a feeling there was a chance that the ‘All Stars’ concept might not resonate with the casual viewers who would rather see new players. Survivor fans love this stuff but it can isoalte viewers when they focus so much on previous seasons especially if you never saw them.

I didn’t think Survivor would do any better than it did. You have to remember that I’m A Celeb had sport as competition whereas now the competition of MAFS and MKR is basically targeting the same potential reality show audience.

Might have actually helped Survivor if the eps were shorter like I’m A Celeb and it would have helped Hughesy too if it started earlier. I watched nothing on FTA last night but recorded Hughesy because it started too late.

On the contrary, I think 10 will be very happy to have the number 2 reality show up against the juggernaut that is MAFS. 10s channel share was up 3% in total people from Celebrity on the same night last year and significantly more in the key demos - up a massive 11 share points in 16-39 and well ahead of Seven.

Agree. The episodes are always way too long but they keep doing it. There’s little hope of viewers staying around for something like Hughesy when they’ve sat through almost 2 hours of Survivor.

(edited with revised figures for MAFS)
1.033 million is the second highest launch figure in MAFS history (it debuted to 1.134 million back in 2015). If this season continues the trend of last season, the show will hit 2 million in no time at all.
The Harry and Meghan documentary did well on the back of MAFS lead-in.
A bit surprised with Survivor All Stars premiere figures although it came a clear second in all demos. It was the show’s lowest launch audience ever.
MKR went up a little from Sunday but that’s the only good news for the show. It will be a long three months ahead for MKR. The 7-day timeshifting and video catch-up on 7plus won’t help make up the gap.
Peter Mitchell returned to Seven News Melbourne from holidays with a narrow loss to Nine News.
How did the Super Bowl rate on Seven yesterday?

yikes! MKR fourth in its slot. It’s been a franchise on the decline for a few years now. Seven should be rethinking any plans to attach the Plate of Origin concept to the MKR brand.

MAFS huge as expected and Survivor did respectable business.

It is a fair feeling considering every all star season of a show in Australia has generally failed to resonate.

600k is ok for Survivor across 2 hours. The demos were strong. If it can continue those figures throughout the season its a huge step up on last years shows.

Hmm not sure if we’re already at the 6th considering Survivor and MAFS kept telling us their premieres were on 3rd

Survivor did OK but in all honesty so much better than what they experienced this time last year. Survivor is a show that builds throughout its season, so who knows it might be able to take some buzz and attention from MAFS.

MKR is already struggling at the instant restaurant stage. It will get only worse from here. Obviously this new concept isn’t firing and audiences are tired of the show itself. They’ll either need to do something with the show or replace it with something new next year.

As for MAFS, not surprised its return rated well, even though I personally find the show unpalatable.

Seven is in big trouble already. May be in for a torrid year.
A good night for the ABC pushing Ten to 4th.

This doesn’t bode well for Masterchef later this year.

Why do I get the impression that most of the shows on 10 this year are celebrity or all-star themed? I mean, there’s obviously merits to it but like you said the ratings are generally weaker than regular seasons regardless of quality.

For the Super Bowl numbers:
Half Time show coded seperate to the game itself? Again?

Surprised Seven didn’t code it like the Big Bash (ie Super bowl First Half, Entertainment and Second Half / big bash session 1, innings break, session 2) etc

Although a slight improvement on Sunday night’s figures, for Seven to barely score over 500k viewers (Less viewers than The Chase Australia at 5.30pm! :open_mouth:) is still an absolutely woeful performance from My Kitchen Rules. Doesn’t bode well for Plate Of Origin, or even the relaunched MasterChef for 2020.

Nine will be pretty happy at the performance of Married At First Sight (and I have little doubt the performance of ACA was helped by the MAFS puff piece that ran towards the end of last night’s show), but obviously I’m disappointed that it was the night’s #1 program.

They’d be stuffed if it wasn’t for their news and overpriced sports deals, I think.

Some of the programming decisions Seven have been making of late are reminiscent of the boneheaded decisions made by Ten, circa 2012-17. Whether or not it’s entirely coincidental that Seven’s current CEO is one who was leading Ten when it nearly got killed, I’ll let you decide!

I feel that the new concept for MKR doesn’t really feel like MKR. The most successful rounds which is the instant restaurants were meant for people cooking their food in their homes. Maybe Seven could have taken this new concept out of the MKR brand. Alas it’s too late now as I think the brand is damaged and I doubt it will ever recover.

I think Seven have been making odd programming decisions for quite some time culminating in the departure of the CEO and the loss of their ratings crown last year. How the mighty have fallen.

Yes, the “All Star” concept doesn’t work in Australia. I don’t know why the producers of these types of shows keep trying to make it work. Viewers prefer to see new contestants in these competition reality shows.

It’s also worse when there are experienced contestants against new ones. It’s an unfair advantage. It’s also why the winners of previous seasons get targeted by contestants and are quickly voted out.

Both MKR and Survivor will suffer with these “All Star” seasons.
