I don’t understand what I just read

I should have explained myself better - sorry about that. What SydneyCityTV said is exactly what I was getting at in that the reason why Nine’s tentpoles are doing so well is because it’s “the least worst option” compared to what Seven & 10 are offering. As such, I don’t think that if they were up against ‘stronger’ competition that they would be dominating in the ratings as they currently are

But they are strong competition. They are beating the other shows. Whether you deem it competition or not you can’t downplay the success of shows that are performing simply because other networks have shows that aren’t performing as well.

I get that an agree. But they are still strong compared to the rest. And I guess you can only compete against what you are given to compete against, right? The test would be if 7 had a new hit show, or if 10 did, what nine would do to combat that. I guess an example of that was them moving Married against MKR. But at the moment why would you get rid of shows that performing so strongly, winning timeslot and getting over 1 million?

True. I reckon numbers in Melbourne only would’ve been lower though

I’m not trying to downplay how successful Nine has been with their tentpoles - they’ve done a successful job over the past few years building a lineup which resonates with the viewing public. All I’m saying is I think most of them aren’t as ‘undefeatable’ as this year’s ratings suggest they are.

I never suggested (nor even hinted) that they should do that

Well said. I don’t think there’s any doubt that Nine have been successful with their “tentpole” primetime programs this year (and to a lesser extent the previous two) but as you say, most of them really aren’t that “undefeatable” and would likely struggle if Seven & Ten had competing programs which were more interesting/different than what both networks have been putting to air this year.

MKR, MasterChef & House Rules were all starting to show their age this year (and are probably nearing the end of their lifespan) while the revivals of Changing Rooms, Dancing With The Stars and now Australia’s Got Talent haven’t exactly set the ratings world on fire.

I have my doubts that the revived version of The Amazing Race Australia is going to reverse that trend. The Masked Singer, another one which I’m worried about since it seems likely that show will be directly competing against AGT and The Block (which I actually think would be the most likely winner if it, AGT & Masked Singer went head to head).

They’ve renewed it for another season for 2020.
