Married at First Sight takes the honours on day one the reality contest with My Kitchen Rules in its earlier time slot well down on previous years. MKR’s launch is its lowest so far and Married also not at the same levels seen last year.

I’m A Celebrity holds on to most of its audience.

Better news on the daily share front though with The Good Doctor et al and Big Bash on 7Mate helping Seven to a good network win, though Nine was ahead in the younger demo groups.

As expected MAFS beat MKR and MAFS over a million while MKR has quite a fall for launch night.

Did the 7pm start for MKR actually hinder it or would it have done worse?

First time ever MAFS beat MKR on launch night. As I predicted yesterday, the 30 minute head start did not help MKR whatsoever. Seven won the night thanks to BBL on 7mate which took four of top 5 multichannel programs. I am guessing No.1 is pre-game, No.2 is session 1, No.3 is innings break and No.5 is session 2?
EDIT: turns out No.1 is session 1, No.2 is innings break, No.3 is session 2 and No.5 is pre-game.

Cheryl “Tiger Mum” Toh’s debut on The Chase failed to lift the show’s ratings (last year the show’s 5.30 portion averaged 609,000).
It’s the second biggest season launch in the history of MAFS (the biggest was season 1 in May 2015 which had 1.134 million viewers). If it follows last year’s trend it’s only a matter of time before it hits the 1.5-2.0 million viewers region.
10 will be happy with I’m a Celebrity holding up against the other reality shows.

I think the 7pm start would have helped Seven albeit just slightly. Cricket or H&A wouldn’t have had those figures against A Current Affair.

Amazing results for MAFS, especially in younger demographics who aren’t as comfortable sitting through ads as older viewers. MAFS is clearly delivering deep engagement and that’s good news for advertisers and Nine. Not only live, but also consolidated and on-demand no doubt.

My Kitchen Rules is no longer the flavour of the moment and is showing no signs of revival in old age. Seven execs will be scratching their heads at what to do about it, or replace it with in 2020.

The Good Doctor miles ahead of the post-stripped format options. It’s such a reliable performer.

Lowest rated episode ever for MKR - not a good start. The 7pm start didn’t seem to negatively impact the other 7pm shows. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a quick shift to 7.30pm.

Seven have said they don’t want Home and Away to be affected by cricket so MKR will likely remain at 7pm. I can’t see how putting it head to head against MAFS (for the entire episode duration) will help it perform better.

The BBL match on 7mate drew 243k which was the lowest so far This season. The match is a one-sided game with scorchers losing to Renegades by a huge margin. The crowd at Optus Stadium was very low, under 20k at the venue. The big Bash League 2018-19 season is too long and therefore, the ratings start to decline.
Meanwhile Married at first sight did very good winning in all cities except Perth, Perth won demographics over MKR.

Surely recording its lowest rating ever should be a sign that viewers don’t like the 7pm timeslot for MKR. It couldn’t even hold onto the audience from the Seven News. Viewers on the other networks are set in their ways; at 7pm they weren’t encouraged to change the channel to Seven but at 7.30pm they might be.

A reminder that I’m A Celebrity launched to 1,098,000. So much for tennis and cricket as launch pads :smile:

I expected MAFS to be more off the back of the Aussie Open and how big it was by the end of last season. The I’m a celeb premiere beat both of them 2 weeks ago in total viewers at a time of the year where typically people don’t watch TV. I’m not surprised at all by MKR numbers though… I had a feeling that this would be the year that it would drop off. If previous season trends are to go by it’s only going to drop off as the season goes on as well. It will be really interesting to see how things settle after a couple of nights.

No, I don’t believe the timeslot is the problem – the age and familiarity of the format is the issue. Viewers on other channels did appear to change habits, compared to last year. Same night in 2018 figures below.

  • A Current Affair 900,000 viewers 29/1/18 (200k drop in 2019)
  • Home and Away 796,000 viewers 29/1/18 (20k increase in 2019 with MKR airing)
  • The Project 7pm 708,000 viewers 29/1/18 (near 300k drop in 2019)

But it’s all relative, there were more viewers sampling the new offerings on the main channels last night and not shopping around the multi’s for alternate programming.

Peach, Life, GEM & Flix all rated around the same.

However, in all previous seasons MKR has increased its audience on its lead in at 7.30pm - viewers change the channel to Seven. This year at 7pm it lost 200,000. In addition, Seven has increased the length of the episodes to 2 hours to accommodate the timeslot with no format change - it is just the same thing for longer. The show needs to move back to 90 minutes at 7.30pm.

I think Seven will be looking closely at the minute-to minute numbers; only those will provide the full picture.
