The Australian Open delivered its highest ratings of the tournament so far pushing Nine to its best Monday result of the year. The result featured a +300k audience in Melbourne for the first time and helped push down the shares for the competition with Seven ABC and 10 each down around 2.5 points, though SBS was unaffected.

Both the Night and Night Session 2 were the best results for their time slots for 2023. The Pre Match lead in was the second best number for the session.

Earlier, it was another impressive result for Seven News with a +200,000 gap opened to Nine News and wins across all markets. Following, Home and Away had its highest audience since the season launch at 7pm. The BBL then managed 241,000 which is at the lower end of this year’s results.

ABC News and 7.30 improved on their recent ratings with Back Roads steady. There was moderate interest in the Bradman and Tendulkar special later in the night.

10’s best result was again The Bachelors, though it was down from the previous Monday with The Project and 10 News top 20 regulars.

At breakfast, Today had its first win of the year, 1k ahead of Sunrise.

Massive audience for the Djokovic-De Minaur encounter even though it turned into a fizzer. Interesting that half of the viewers stayed around for the women’s doubles match that followed.

I am sure many people will have recorded this show and will watch it in another time (like me), or catch it on iView later this week.

That’s something new… interesting.

Good result for the Tennis but it almost certainly would have peaked a lot higher if it wasn’t such a one-sided match.

A better night for Ten at 14% and I would suggest this should be the bare minimum for the rest of the year.

It will be interesting to see if the numbers for the Bachelors pick over the next 2 nights for the finales and I would suggest they will and give the network a boost

I think 14% is a bit generous as a minimum for Ten. The big issue is that Ten is a commercial business and therefore in the pursuit of profit for its shareholders (i.e. Paramount US). And that’s why Ten’s constant underperformance matters because ultimately their owners will decide if their investment is justified by Ten’s ROI. Do we want to see Ten flogged off or close down? I don’t. So when will Ten finally address their chronic underperformance???

I’d choose tennis over cricket any day of the week.

But for the most part the Aus Open has only been about 200k ahead of the cricket. And 7’s paying alot less than 9.

The interest in the tennis is really dependent on the Aussies playing, and therefore perhaps last night it reached its peak.

The Men’s final used to be one of the highest rating television events of the year. I’d be surprised if that even come close to being the case this year.

Really?

But “only 200 ahead” isn’t much more that the Big Bash has been rating since the tennis started - so the tennis on Nine is double the cricket on Seven.

Absolutely agreed.

But doubling a really disappointing figure still equals a disappointing figure.

And if I am paying more for it, id be pretty disappointed.

You keep suggesting this, why? Seven are actually paying more, way more for their CA contract than Nine’s TA. And the former’s ROI has largely been in the pits, I’ll cite their desperation recently to exit said deal and attempt to return to their former code, only another network renewing theirs made that impossible, excruciatingly for them.

Sorry im talking about the new deals they have signed, at which time nine will be paying more.

Granted thats not the case this year. But my point remains.

As per a report shared in the Paramount ANZ thread, Ten is making a profit. And that’s the most important metric as you say.

Just like in the 90s and 00s when Ten might have been the lowest rating commercial network but it was profitable and what kept it going.

It’s not just the Aussie’s but a lot of high profile international players (both on the male and female side of the draw) are either not participating or flunked out early this year. So that would have had a big impact.

Yeah but the Men’s final is always one of the most watched events of the year and sets up Nine for a massive start of the year. So I’m sure it all pays off.

Tennis is just one of those sports - it will have it’s big years and not as big years depending on the draw, who is playing, if particular players gain momentum etc. Interestingly though the Australian Open attendance at Melbourne Park this year looks like it could end up as the biggest yet. Numerous days have broken attendance records with Saturday being the highest attended day ever.

This is it, the men have been dominated by the big 3/4 for so long that there’s no other personalities that have been able to develop before running into them and inevitably losing.

The women have a similar issue although they’ve developed personalities but Osaka, Barty, Serena Williams all not missing or retired.

Iga Swiatek is the world number one (and has lost now) but I doubt most Australians would recognise her walking down the street.

I doubt it will be that bik this year.
