Seven suffers another post Olympic failure as the launch of the new SAS season lands fourth in its timeslot. The result is down from the 2021 season launch that had 647,000 and 2020 that had 834,000.

Better news for Seven was a win at 6pm and a better performance from Home and Away at 7pm though The Amazing Race later missed the top 20.

Married at First Sight on Nine continued to easily win its timeslot despite a small drop from the previous week. Survivor on 10 was also slightly lower though The Project was up 100k week-on-week.

Four Corners made a welcome return to the top 20 for ABC with better results for Back Roads and Media Watch as well.

Not surprising. They have aired too many seasons so close to one another. The last season ended in October, which they then followed with some episodes with non-celeb contestants. It just seems way too soon for another season.

Once again not surprising. Weak lead in and 2 hour episode that run until 11pm.

Not surprised with the low figures for SAS season launch. Its rivals MAFS and Survivor had a three week head start and are pretty established in the 7.30pm timeslot.

With the SAS season launching last night, French production giant Banijay now “owns” the 7.30pm timeslot on Mondays and Tuesdays with three shows made by its two local subsidiaries: SAS by Screentime, and MAFS and Survivor by Endemol Shine Australia.

really a questionable decision for seven to launch SAS here against two tentpoles that have had the head start , especially with survivor already there which you would think would have the same audience. If SAS drops tonight then it will be a disaster for seven. Numbers like this are passable for ten but not for seven
I guess this is the bad part of having the olympics - may have helped them win those weeks but now has stuffed their line up for the remainder of the quarter

Is paying all that money for olympic rights to help you win 2 weeks, worth stuffing up the quarter??!?!?

Have to wonder about the value of Olympic rights. Very expensive and reportedly purchased as a loss leader as a means to promote the rest of the schedule. What is their value when more often than not that doesn’t work.

A poor start for SAS considering the cross promotion it received on the number one breakfast and morning shows and across the Olympics.

I guess the question is what else do you put on? You cannot just roll over and not put any franchises just because MAFS is on.

Not getting away from the fact that is is a disappointing linear launch for SAS. Though, year-on-year Seven has a similar % share (MAFS down 100k-ish year on year), Holey Moley actuyally rated higher at 491k on Mon 22 Feb 2021. The consolidated figures for SAS will be much more than Holey Moley, but no way they will be in the realm of MAFS 50%+ consolidated numbers.

Interest was already waning for this series but putting it up against the Survivor was a stupid idea because both shows would have some of the same fan base.

I don’t think anyone would be surprised at the low figures of SAS. Seven thought they were smart in that a moderate hit in SAS would be able to compete against MAFS but they failed to realise that it was only doing alright in face of weaker competition in The Block. Add to the fact that this is practically a variation of the Survivor genre and airing it directly against Survivor itself was always going to be ratings poison.

Seven needs to reconsider their strategy for Q1 because this is the 4th year in a row they’ve messed this up which is appalling. They need to find the next show with the capability to dent MAFS and whatever 10 has on. They can do it, but they need to work on it very meticulously.

SAS was again a silly programming move. Why pit this up against Survivor? There are so many shows 7 could have started the year off with. Dancing with the Stars and SAS were not the right moves. Personally I would have launched the year off with Apartment Rules and the Fully Monty specials. Even Got Talent and Idol would have been better.

This is why double episodes don’t work. You lose viewers in the second episode because it goes so late (and long). Then a lot of them won’t come back next week.

I really enjoyed it (nothing new there) and found the back stories very interesting. They seemed to have picked some really worthy teams.

And then you lose viewers (like me) for The Latest.

Didn’t The Voice premiere out of the Olympics last year?

I was thinking of more recently and DWTS on Sunday.

wasn’t it a case of ‘what can they record and deliver in time due to COVID impacts’ as opposed to having the luxury of having a full shelf of product ready to go.
