New seasons for LEGO Masters and MasterChef saw a very competitive Monday. Nine topped the night with Seven less than two points behind while 10 climbed above 20% network share. Nine won the key demos 25-54 and 18-49 with 10 ranked second. 10 won 16-39.

First night numbers were, however, way down with both franchises recording their lowest launch episodes for any season. LEGO ranked first at 7.30 with 838,000 with MasterChef second on 670,000. That compares to 2020 when 1.238 million watched the season opener of LEGO Masters and 1.228 million watched MasterChef All Stars season opener.

Meanwhile Seven’s Dancing With The Stars improved from last Monday by 86,000 as Home and Away posted a 2021 high. ABC’s line up lost ground on the previous week.

That’s what happens when two shows targetting the same family audience started on the same night.

Lego Masters won every city except Perth where DWTS was No.1. MasterChef came third in Adelaide and Perth, and second in the east coast.

670,000 is the lowest season launch in the 13-year history of MasterChef Australia, even less than season 11 in 2019 which got 715,000. 10 will be bitterly disappointed with the figures, especially given the ratings the show got 12 months ago. 10 will need strong ratings in video catch-up and 7-day consolidated to make the season premiere ratings look more respectable.

Nine won the night but not without a cost - very low shares for 9GO!, 9Gem and 9Rush.

Very close between Seven News and Nine News in Melbourne.

Wow! That is horrible for both Lego Masters & Master Chef under the magic 1 million.

Just shows they should’ve launched 3 weeks ago and not be afraid of going up against MAFS.

Was NOT expecting that. Thought I had the wrong ratings considering Lego Masters and MasterChef were not right at the top.

Maybe it would have been better if MasterChef stuck with the original Tuesday launch. I’ll be interested to see the numbers for tonight.

Also, need to consider that last year, both franchises launched at the height of the COVID pandemic with people at home.

Ouch for Lego and Masterchef - well down on all previous seasons.

I watched Masterchef but man oh man why the hell do these shows need to go for 2 hours - this is the first real commercial TV offering I’ve stuck into this year with exception of a few ABC shows and I really missed being able to binge netflix series and just really turn off from the barrage of commercials etc - if Masterchef and no doubt others were a tighter 60 mins even 90 minute episode I’d be more inclined to stay tuned each night but even as an avid fan I’m considering tuning out this season and it has nothing to do with the production quality etc.

It’s a lot cheaper for the network than producing/buying 2x 1 hour shows.
Plus they want to milk it for ratings as it’s about the only popular show 10 has left.

10 saying they were up 102% week on week, and that MasterChef achieved its biggest live stream launch on 10 play.

Ouch for both Lego Masters and Masterchef. Seems like Masterchef’s resurgence last year was largely due to the all-stars and a regular season wouldn’t be able to arrest its existing decline. Junior Masterchef probably didn’t help either as it most likely overexposed the format. 10 will be hoping that the show doesn’t decline otherwise they’re going to be in a world of pain for the next little while. They’ve put all their eggs in one basket for Masterchef to work.

Lego’s decline is surprising too. Not sure what went wrong there though as the show seemed like the same as the previous years.

2 hours is too long. I started to watch MasterChef but tuned out after about an hour.

So the audience was bigger than those ratings indicate.

Oh I get why - but all networks risk cooking their formats out the gate.

10 isn’t the only ones who do this. Lego Masters was also close to 2 hours last night. Even tolerant fans like myself will start to tune out.

Ten would be hoping that MCs ratings are just a hangover from their very poor efforts over the last few weeks and the viewers will still come. Unless you watch The Project you wouldn’t have seen any promos for MC and wouldn’t know it started last night.

Have to wonder what would have been more damaging to MC; competing with MAFS, or the complete loss of network momentum from the dead air ten has had in the leadup over the last 3 weeks?

Definitely also another factor to consider. Although by that metric it seems Seven is doing better, up on the equivalent Monday last year with DWTS vs House Rules which flopped last year. Looks like it’s ripe for renewal if it maintains its figures, which it probably will unlike 10’s series which dropped every episode.

To be fair, Gogglebox viewers would’ve probably seen those promos too. It’s just Masterchef after Masterchef and nothing else being promoted (apart from the occasional HYBPA promo).

10’s pinned all their hopes on Masterchef performing so they would be dearly hoping that it rises throughout the season otherwise they’re going to have a hard time for the rest of the year.

Even disregarging the lockdown, it’s still the lowest rated launch ever.

We can only hope this is a nail in the coffin for reality shows as a concept.

anyone watching any Channel 10 program in the last 3-4 weeks would have been smashed with MC ads in every ad break

It’s not really surprising that both LM and MC got under a million because they cannibalised each other.
