Three reality launches last night and it was bad news for at least linear FTA viewing with all posting their lowest launch numbers ever.

Seven strategically launched The Voice at 7pm to take a lead on its rivals and to take advantage of Easter Monday afternoon AFL. The tactic seems to have paid off with the singing contest an easy winner with total people. The rating of 843,000, however was down almost half a million viewers from last year’s successful season where the first episode had 1,238,000.

Over on Nine, LEGO Master’s fourth season was second at 7.30 with 672,000. It fared a bit better in comparison to 2021, ‘only’ down 160k from last year’s 834,000 audience.

Meanwhile MasterChef landed third with 545,000 – roadblocked across three channels. That was 125k less than the 2021 launch that managed 670,000.

In percentage terms LEGO Masters and MasterChef were both down 19% year-on-year while The Voice dropped 37%. Looking at the key 25-54 demo LEGO Masters was down 23%, MasterChef 24% while The Voice was down 45%.

We will have to see what impact a 7.30pm start will have on The Voice tonight and how streaming and catch up numbers compare to previous seasons.

Seven won overall, 5 points clear of Nine. 10’s multis were way down as expected while ABC had its lowest Monday share of the year.

Seven News won all markets except Sydney. Strange numbers in Brisbane where Seven was well ahead at 6pm but Nine easily won at 6.30pm.

That is a very surprising result for Lego Masters, though at least the demos look decent. The Voice is a lot lower which is understandable considering it didn’t have the halo effect of the Olympics. Masterchef flounders on the first night which is surely got to be concerning (even with the road blocking).

10’s last minute decision to show MasterChef across three channels backfired spectacularly. The preliminary audience of 545,000 makes it the lowest ever season launch in MasterChef Australia history (excluding spinoffs).

Would I Lie to You was even with last week despite the late start, it will be interesting to see if the ratings over the season warrants a renewal.

Another AFL thriller between the Cats and the Hawks, but the FTA audience was down on the corresponding match last year (464,000), while the pay TV audience was slightly up on last year’s 202,000.

The Harry Potter 20th anniversary special failed to benefit from the Voice lead-in, missing the top 20, as did the preview episode for Full Bloom.

The Doctor Who special just made the multichannel top 20.

10 Bold and 10 Peach both seem to be down due to the MasterChef roadblock.

The Voice did very well, while Lego Masters did pretty good too.

Idiots running 10.
Completely screwed over their multichannels last night.

Seven have to keep The Voice at 7pm. They’d be stupid not too.

I love Home and Away and don’t like seeing it shuffled around just as much as anyone else, but I think The Voice would rate better.

I have to agree actually. Home and Away has been getting between 350,000 - 500,000 at 7pm lately which means roughly 300,000 - 400,000 deliberately tuned into 7 at 7pm.

Well probably more only 200k switched off from the news compared to 500k for Home and Away

From Seven

The Voice topped Monday as the #1 entertainment program

  • It’s the biggest entertainment show launch of 2022 nationally.
  • Seven was the #1 network in total people at 25 to 54s last night. Up 25% YoY in 25 to 54s

From Nine:

  • Lego Masters was the No.1 program with People 25-54 and GS + Child across the 5 City Metro
  • Lego Masters dominated its timeslot with People 25-54, 16-39 and GS + Child across the 5 City Metro
  • Lego Masters launch recorded the highest Live BVOD Audience of the series so far, with 34,000 people tuning in ( +30% YoY)
  • Lego Masters recorded a Live + VOD BVOD Audience of 42,000, up 23% YoY
  • 9News won its timeslot with Total People in Sydney
  • ACA Timeslot winner in Sydney with GS + Child
  • 9 Network was the No. 1 network on Monday across the 5 City Metro with GS + Child (31.9%)

From 10:

MasterChef Australia: Fans & Favourites - Launch:

  • #3 entertainment show in under 50s and all key demos.
  • #2 in its timeslot in under 50s and all key demos.
  • Biggest ever live stream audience for a launch.
  • Live stream audience up 10% year-on-year.

The Project 7pm:

  • #2 in its timeslot in under 50s and 16 to 39s.

Would I Lie To You? Australia:

  • #2 in its timeslot.
  • #2 in its timeslot in under 50s and all key demos.

Not surprised by the ratings of the 3 reality shows.

Seven were smart to launch The Voice at 7pm. It won but still down on last season. It will be interesting to see if it holds that audience over the coming days.

MasterChef was always going to struggle when Ten havn’t had much of an audience for the past few weeks. Hopefully it can gain some momentum.

All 3 were pretty close in demos.

It seems like if Seven and 10 actually tried with their shows they can actually be competitive against Nine and Lego which was pretty much dominating the roost two years ago. Back then it was when House Rules was dwindling and Masterchef was in the process of being revamped and Lego pretty much had a free run. Now that Seven and 10 have put up established competition against it it becomes a lot more competitive.

MasterChef was only 5k off The Voice in 25-54 and 2k off in 18-39.

As of this morning The Voice is leading in the BVOD numbers ahead of MasterChef then LEGO Masters.

Nine would be spewing that they let The Voice go

The Voice always dropped off after the auditions which was why they let it go and that trend hasn’t stopped on Seven. I don’t think they’d be spewing but I still think their lineup could be even stronger with The Voice. Celebrity Apprentice and Beauty and the Geek aren’t really as strong as The Voice overall.

A lot of people are taking holidays between Easter and Anzac Day so that could have affected ratings with people away on holidays or out doing other things. Might have been a bad idea to launch all these reality shows on Easter Monday.

Apart from obviously being Seven’s day, of the various numbers that appear quite low, the standout for mine is Lego (which is used to seeing much much bigger audiences). I think the stronger competition, let alone launch night, would be to blame.

Will be interesring to see what happens the next couple of nights, as well as catch-up figures (also still non-ratings and school holidays) and certainly next week when household routines and audiences should resume, where it starts with a split-schedule and no Voice for Seven on Sunday. Will it be a needed free kick to Nine and 10? Or if their mediocre ratings continue, maybe Hey Hey 100 and the AFL will benefit?

No matter how many channels a show is aired on, the result will always be the same in overall audience. Surely that lesson has been learnt by now? There is no way having Masterchef on 3 channels would come anywhere close to picking up the viewers who would normally watch what airs on the other channels - for example - NCIS on BOLD usually around that time. All it does it drives down channel shares.

Yeah agree. It would have been interesting to see the impact if one of them started next week.
