Data © OzTAM Pty Limited 2023. The Data may not be reproduced, published or communicated (electronically or in hard copy) in whole or in part, without the prior written consent of OzTAM. “Overnight” figures include “Live” (programs broadcast during the 2am-2am broadcast day) and “As Live” (programs recorded and then watched within the same broadcast day). “Consolidated” figures include Live, As Live and “Time Shift” (programs recorded and then watched within seven days of the initial broadcast).

A very interesting Monday ratings result with a lot of information to unpack. The headline is that on the first night of the Australian Open Seven won the night – main channel and network shares. That was despite a below average result for the BBL as the tennis got off to a poor start for Nine.

Seven News took out a massive +200,000 victory at 6pm as Nine News continues to underperform, perhaps impacted by the afternoon’s tennis as a lead in. Home and Away, that followed was down 60k from the previous week’s season premiere. BBL landed 15th for the night, lower than the results for recent weeks while 7Bravo with its first night of reality programming saw the channel on 1.3%.

The Night session of the tennis just made the top 10 with a preliminary number of 357,000 with the second coding of Night Session 2 on 263,000. That compares to the 2022 tournament that had 635,000 for night one and is the lowest first day for the AO on Nine; the previous low being 2021 with 486,000. The AO’s last year on Seven in 2018 had 589,000 on day one. Note that Nine have again strategically split the Night session into 2 codings – there is also a Late coding that missed the top 20.

As usual individual matches will have higher audiences than the sessions and the 9Now audience is unknown at the moment. Nine will be hoping for much better results across the rest of the tournament. Meanwhile 9Gem’s coverage gained 3.9% and the tennis rated better than the cricket in the demos.

ABC had a good night with ABC News winning at 7pm and the combo of 7.30 and Back Roads also a timeslot winner. Later, Undercover also did well.

Over on 10, The Bachelors was up slightly from the season launch of the previous Monday to a season high. The result was notable for outperforming the competition in all key demos where it ranked in the top five. Also making the top 20 were The Project and 10 News.

Without news on Nine, Seven’s afternoon bulletin had a rare top 20 entry. Sunrise also ranked in the top programs and was 40,000 ahead of Today that featured Sarah Abo’s first morning.

The withdrawal of several big names took an early toll on Nine’s Australian Open ratings. It will be interesting to see the live streaming numbers later on.

The first women’s ODI between Australia and Pakistan rated quite well on pay TV, but missed the FTA multichannel top 20.

Kyrgios withdrawal from the Australian Open have taken a massive hit on Nine.
Big Bash League between the Stars and Heat performed well thanks to a thrilling game.

He wasn’t scheduled to play last night so I’m not sure how that corresponds.

I think Kyrgios was expected to play tonight, not last night.

The numbers for the first day pf the Australian Open is lower than i expected. Hoping it picks up as the tournament progresses.

I would think 7 would be pretty happy with this result.

Was a great end to the game!

7 would be thrilled to have Sunrise make the top 20 for the return of its hosts and on a day that Today has most of the attention of media-pundits. Not a huge figure - but making the top 20 sends a good message.

9 would be disappointed, no doubt, at the Australian Open. It’s a marathon, not a sprint and even as a tennis fan, I thought the matches last night were not super engaging.

surely january is where ten should be experimenting with bringing forward their sunday programming to 7pm. For bachie, with its rustted on viewers, to jump from 250K on Sunday to over 310K last night shows that the 7/7.30pm time on sunday hurts them. I know they dont want to be a follower but thats getting harder and harder with them being such a distant third/fourth network. I think they just need to bite the bullet and have 5pm news, 6pm project on sundays and start their scheduling at 7pm like seven and nine do.

From 10:

The Bachelors Australia:

  • Biggest overnight audience of the year.
  • Biggest live stream audience of the year.
  • #1 commercial series on BVOD with 37.6 million minutes viewed.
  • #1 entertainment show in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.
  • #1 in its timeslot in under 50s, 25 to 54s and 16 to 39s.

Not the best start for Nine and the Australian Open. The Tennis has never been a great lead into news. Seven also had this problem many years ago.

I expect numbers to improve as the week goes on.

The numbers for 9 Adelaide News are shocking, 12mths ago, it was neck and neck with Seven. Since the start of December the numbers have crashed and aren’t recovering. 60k difference is major issue, when last year they were at worse 15k difference. Ouch!

I remember Seven also had the same problem when they had the tennis rights. The oldies tend to want their game show fix.

isn’t the AO always a bit of a slow start in the ratings?

Hard to believe the numbers are even lower than the 2021 covid-shifted event held in February, where Night 1 was critiqued with a low (but higher than last night) result, but up against Holey Moley’s 900k+ launch on Seven and outside school holidays. Wonder if the retirement of Barty had an impact? Also last year had wall-to-wall coverage in the lead-up with Djokovic deportation saga.

I would say though, the total audience (including 9Now and even regional and Stan Sport) would be interesting, considering TV only keeps going down and once not all that long ago all the Aus Open had was one broadcast channel.

Tennis is lacking serious star power with Federer, Serena and Barty all gone. I know he ended up pulling out injured but either Kyrgios or Djokovic should have been on night one to set the tournament up.
Heck even today’s Murray/Berretini would have been better.
It was an underwhelming first night session.

Always. And I know it will build. Just seems to be lower than usual.

Yes, the tennis can start slow but last night the average audience for the 2 night sessions (not including late night) was just 310,000. Last year it was 572,000; so this would be the lowest start to the tournament so far.
