The first night featuring new reality products for Seven and 10.

Seven narrowly won the night with wins in Sydney, Melbourne (by 0.1%) and Perth while Nine won in Brisbane and Adelaide.

Nine won 25-54 from 10 and 1- won 16-39 from Nine.

The Block won the reality contest continuing its recent set of good numbers. The show also won all key demo groups. Next best was the reveal part of the first episode of the Masked Singer with 760k while the rest of the show averaged 642,000. That compares to 828,000 / 735,000 for the 2020 season premiere.

Meanwhile SAS Australia’s second season averaged 647,000, well down from the first season’s’ launch episode that had 834,000. The show ranked 8th in 25-54.

Later, Have You been Paying attention with 639,000, down on last week but an easy timeslot winner as Under Investigation sank to a season low and ranked 23rd for the night.

On Seven Australian Gangster debuted in a disappointing 22nd place - equal with Under Investigation.

For ABC, Four Corners had its best result since June while Australian Story also managed over 600k metro viewers.

Ouch for both Masked Singer and SAS. Clearly Seven made a mistake by allowing The Block to have so much airtime to themselves that the audience seems to be attached to that show now. Next year they need to make sure that they have enough episodes of whatever they’re airing to go up against their competition.

Both SAS and The Masked Singer have their work cut out to catch up on The Block.

More ratings details today including ratings for afternoon programs plus individual city ratings for breakfast.

Afternoon ranking included Tipping Point with 304,000 and Nine Afternoon News with 295,000 while Seven Afternoon News had 214,000 and 189,000 with The Chase UK on 137,000.

I’d be interested to know if the 2pm programs help as lead-ins to the game shows at 3pm, or is Tipping Point so popular that viewers just tune in en masse?

Good pick up. The Chase UK at 3pm has lost pace. It will be interesting to see how long Seven keep it in this timeslot. Clearly having an affect on the The Afternoon News.

Not much difference (15,000) in the lead in numbers for Pointless on Nine and What the Killer Did Next on Seven.

With the 6pm news ratings on the East Coast reasonably close of late, I wonder if we’ll eventually see Seven or Nine splash out on a major relaunch or promotional campaign in a bid to widen the gap?

Good to hear that Juanita outrated Tracy in Sydney last night.

As for The Block, it’s pretty obvious that show only rates whenever Seven or Ten lack effective competition.

Not really. Seven almost halves the gap from 3pm to the 4pm hour. It’s better than you’d expect with that lead-in.

Nine win mainly because their Afternoon News is at 5pm in Adelaide and Perth (more people watch TV at 5pm than 4pm). Nine has always won with the local 4pm bulletins on the east coast too, so not much change there.

9’s extra channel gives them the network win.

Think Seven won the network shares by 0.3%. But yes your point still stands. Seven are probably wishing they had 7Food Network with them.

Now that OpenShop has been pulled off air, it’ll be interesting to see if Seven cook up another attempt at a 5th multichannel sometime in the next year or so…

Ah true. I read it the wrong way around

I thought 7 used to win 4-5pm until recently.

While Nine having an extra multichannel compared to Seven occasionally makes a difference on close rating nights, it doesn’t determine that many nights such that it’s an urgent issue for Seven.

I would rather see Seven use the spectrum to increase the bitrates of 7TWO and 7flix.

…or even a HD version of one of those channels.

In reality though, there seems to be more money in quantity rather than quality…
