Win for Seven with Nine down 4 points from last Tuesday and just ahead of Ten in Network share. 10 and ABC picked up 2 points and Seven was up 1. Nine, however, still managed to win Sydney but finished third in the other markets.

I’m A Celebrity continued its good run, topping the demos in all markets and up 60,000 on the same episode from 2019.

10 News Perth at 5pm was well ahead of Nine’s bulletin for Monika Kos’s first night. In that city the 6pm portion of the news rated at the same level as The Project at 6.30pm.

10 News First 6pm ranked 27th.

Good figures for Celebrity. The Project continues its momentum. The 6:30 portion up on last weeks figure.

It seems to be decreasing…

Peter Hitchener’s first night back on Nine News Melbourne for 2020 only beat Seven News by a small margin. Peter Mitchell returns next week.

@TV.Cynic have you got any idea how 48 Hours rated?

There are entries for “48 Hours - Late” that are way down the list of programs. Is this on Bold?

Yes that is the one that would have been on bold. It was quite the success last week.

Despite a lopsided BBL match between Perth Scorchers and Hobart Hurricanes, Seven won the night easily. CHannel 10’s primary channel beat Nine’s primary channel thanks to I’m a Celebrity (which also topped the Demos.). 10 are starting to be more competitive during the summer ratings period.

*Non-ratings period, but it really should be.

I wonder if I will ever be alive to witness an all year-round ratings period in Australia (including summer period).

FTA tv will fade out before that happens.

I highly doubt it. Frequent interruptions for Sports coverage make it difficult for the networks (particularly Seven & Nine) to have a reliable week to week programming schedule for most of the Summer non-ratings period.

There’s also the fact that during Summer, many Australians are doing pretty much everything except watching TV because quite understandably people would rather be away on holidays or out socialising with family/friends during mid-January when it’s warm and the Sun is still out until 8pm, rather than mid-July when it’s cold and pitch black by 5.30pm!

Yes…I think I will still be alive to witness the death of FTA rather than an all year round ratings period LOL

Ratings are measured all year round now, it is just that there is a set period that the networks use to set advertising rates as well as bragging rights. It also allows presenters to get a holiday and some of the juniors to get some practice in. So I don’t see it changing. There’s nothing to stop networks bragging about their success outside of the Feb-Nov period either and its unlikely that advertising agencies aren’t on top of the ratings during December and January.

Being a non-sport fan, I applaud Ten for their bold move of scheduling first-run non-sports program during the summer period. I imagine that the Celebrity Jungle show wouldn’t be cheap.

Would be cheaper than sports rights + production ide imagine.

Shouldn’t the audiences who watch Summer sports like cricket and tennis ‘matter’ just as much for networks as those who AFL and NRL during Winter?

At the moment, what the non-ratings period does is suggest that’s not the case.

There would be nothing stopping networks doing all of that during the Christmas/New Year period if there was a year-round ratings period.

Sure but it’s like an AFL/NRL team who finished inside the bottom half of the ladder last year beating the premiers during the pre-season - they can brag about it but the victory doesn’t mean much because the season hasn’t begun

Fair point. However the scheduling of AFL/NRL can hardly be compared to that of cricket & tennis which each often affect the programming schedules for several consecutive days and in the case of the Australian Open, two weeks of the broadcaster essentially becoming an “all tennis” channel from around 10am until late night!

I can understand what Ten are doing with I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here and applaud them for that, but how are Seven & Nine suppose to schedule anything resembling “ratings season” programming with a reliable week to week schedule in December & January? How do you follow a series of any genre on networks you’ll know will pre-empt stuff for sports coverage (and in the case of December, Christmas “Special Events” like Carols or magazine advertisments festive lifestyle specials) on a fairly regular basis?

At least with the AFL & NRL, the nighttime regular season games of both codes are typically scheduled on lower rating Thursday, Friday & Saturday nights rather than the other three which is where Seven/Nine schedule most of their big guns. And before things like State Of Origin and the NRL Grand Final get brought up, those are different kettles of fish with the spectacle of such matches typically being centred around making an event of the television coverage (especially these days) more than anything else, what with all the innovations and sponsorship plugs you’d never see during a regular season match!
