Two reality franchises kicked off on Monday night, one successfully and one a ‘failure to launch’. Nine’s Parental Guidance took over from the Block and easily won its timeslot with 629,000 metro viewers as well as topping all three key demo groups.

Nine won all markets except Perth that was won by Nine. 10 ranked second in the key demos.

By contrast Big Brother VIP finished fourth at 7.30 with just 377,000 watching the first episode. That ranks the show below the launch of The Bachelorette (397,000), SAS Hell Week (397,000), Making It (473,000) and Ultimate Tag (447,000). It compares to the regular season that launched with 664,000 in April.

Elsewhere, most programming rated lower with Have You Been Paying Attention down 130k and Celebrity MasterChef down 80k. ABC’s programs also down on last week while Doctor Who premiered to 94,000 on ABC TV Plus.

Hot Seat and The Project posted Monday lows for the year while The Chase it was its second lowest Monday.

Later, with a smaller lead in Love Island was down 70k to its lowest Monday of the series.

This was the first Monday since March without a show over one million.

This is quite a big upset with Parental Guidance beating all comers (including HYBPA) to help Nine to win the night.

Gee that doesn’t seem so bad now.

Cue Nine to churn out ‘Parental Guidance DOMINATES’ headlines.

Shocked to see how poorly Big Brother VIP went.

I would’ve thought more people would tune in to see the likes of Thomas Markle, Caitlyn Jenner, Omarosa, the MAFS contestant etc.

Not surprised at all that Big Brother VIP bombed since it’s such a contrived piece of rubbish. :poop:

Parental Guidance didn’t have a spectacular debut but it beat the competition. Will be interesting to see if it holds interest or drops.

Conversely, it appears that many have chosen not to because the whole lineup is a toxic combination overall. It’s not like Caitlyn Jenner, Thomas Markle Jr and Jessika Power are likeable or appealing. The Katie Hopkins controversy probably didn’t help either.

Seven should’ve gone for a much more common, probably almost ‘generic’ lineup of Australian celebrities and it would’ve rated way better. Comedians, footy players, singer, actor, reality show contestant, former politicians.

I think a lot of people were expecting Danny in the house last night. Maybe that might have helped a little but not sure.

Agree. While Parental Guidance outrating it was an outcome I thought was plausible, it tanking is something which is really surprising.

Would it though? Seven’s thought process behind the casting selections for Big Brother VIP was obviously getting a bunch of high-profile, outspoken personalities would draw viewers in. If that has had the opposite effect (ie; it convinced people not to watch it), I doubt having a ‘bland’ ‘generic’ celebrity line-up would have worked either.

It would have, I imagine having toxic people like Caitlyn, Omarosa and Thomas Markle in the show turned a lot of people from watching.

Agree. I think viewers would be more interested in Australians talking about Australian issues rather than Donald Trump and OJ Simpson.

Jenner is just on rinse and repeat. Go watch her on I’m a celeb UK and Omarosa in her previous BB stint. It’s all the same stuff. They say all the same things.

Big dollars thrown at the series also.

Ouch…

It would’ve. I’m a Celebrity is pretty much the same concept based in a jungle and they didn’t cast a bunch of Pete Evans and the ratings works a treat.

None of these people widely resonate with Australians. Certainly not enough to see people tuning in en masse.

To be honest I didn’t even know the show started last night, but I never watch Channel 7 so I would not have seen any promotion for it.

The main difference though is I’m a Celeb airs during summer when it has ‘clear air’ from an entertainment/reality POV.

While the top entertainment program, I’d say the figure Nine received for last night’s premiere of Parental Guidance was lukewarm at best. It might still hover around the 500k-600k mark for the series duration though, due to viewers seeing it as “the least worst option” compared to what’s on Seven & Ten at the moment.

I’m not.

Exactly. Other celebrity “reality” shows like IAC,GMOOH and DWTS might be chock full of B/C/D list celebrities…but at least they’re all (or mostly) Australian B/C/D listers.
