Metro Radio Ratings - Survey 6, 2024

ABC stations in Adelaide, Perth and Canberra would also have been impacted.

ABC Adelaide saw its breakfast and evenings shows both declining by 0.2 from last survey. (Breakfast was broadcast live from Paris during two weeks of the Olympics)

ABC Perth suffered a big 2.2 drop in evenings from last survey.

The latest survey for Canberra was posted this morning in another thread.

As well as ‘blaming’ Olympics for 2GB’s drop I also read that they were saying the survey process was at fault - when in doubt…

Great result for 4BH and Triple M

There’s always a chance of that happening - rogue ‘books’ do happen (wrong sample demographic or similar and boosted into a survey that becomes a chasm). The question will be whether it’s a trend or just a one off.

Don’t they have that 24/7 Kyle and Jackie O Station on iHeart? Just relay that

They haven’t had a Kyle and Jackie O 24/7 station for years.

It was only one for one summer then vanished.

Indeed. Launched December 2021, and then I think maybe discontinued after February or March of the next year, 2022. Information on the exact discontinuation date of the All Day KJ stream on iHeartRadio is scarce, but here’s an interesting article from when it launched.

The drop at Gold for Christian O’Connell over the past couple of surveys is linked to a pullback on the advertising spend, said Campbell. “We strategically decided not to market him as heavily this year. You could argue that wasn’t the best decision for that show. He has suffered a bit this year. I thought it would bounce back this survey, so I expect that will happen next survey.”

He says in the article that they changed 97.3 from AC to CHR to “fit in with the networking” but then goes on to blab about how great Mix 102.3 and 96fm are doing and how much they researched the music. My question is why are they treating 97.3 so differently? The three stations operate in almost identical competitive environments. Why are they sacrificing 97.3? It should actually be more important than the other two based on a bigger population. Is it just pure cost cutting? And if so why wouldn’t they do the same to 102.3 in Adelaide? It would be just as easy to network, and less risky due to Adelaide being about half the size of Brisbane. Nothing makes sense with this guy.

He also brings up Christian O’Connell time and time again to justify K&J’s expansion into Melbourne. But how is that even remotely similar? O’Connell is a standalone, Melbourne based show, while K&J are a networked show piped in from Sydney (with smut content).

Robbing Peter to pay Paul doesn’t work when both shows are on long-term, multi-million dollar contracts.

I think the writing is on the wall for 97.3 - you wouldn’t go so far to change the station only to not network Kyle and Jackie in next year.

It’ll be a race to the bottom between KIIS Brisbane and Melbourne in breakfast.

But would have almost certainly have been networked in some capacity under an ARN-owned Triple M.

They’re changing 97.3’s playlist to gear up for a K&J arrival.

Yes I get that, but my question is why 97.3 and not Mix 102.3 and 96fm.

Yep I agree. But as it stands he can’t hold up the success of the current O’Connell show in the context of networking K&J into Melbourne.

Now who’s going to help Duncan put A and B together from the first and last sentence there.

Seems like he’d probably need a white board and some diagrams

The guy is trying to justify his job . Its all bullshit corporate talk. They know its been a big fuck up.

He’s also preparing us about the incoming changes to Brisbane. They need to pay for K&J (10 year contract) deal and doing this they’ll need to axe all local breakfast shows and reduce overheads to accommodate.

As a Brisbane listener, I find Robin & Kip quite enjoyable…
Shame we’re going to have to sit through K & JO all next year by the looks of it.
