John Maclean, the cricketer who said no to Kerry Packer, has been lauded as one of the game’s finest team men after dying less than three weeks after his 80th birthday.
Outstanding Queensland wicketkeeper Maclean, who played all of his four Tests in the 1978-79 series against England after Packer’s rebel World Series Cricket recruited stars including Test gloveman Rod Marsh, died in Brisbane on Saturday.
Maclean had been ill for over a year and many of his oldest friends became concerned about his welfare when he failed to respond to their texts for his 80th birthday on April 27.
