This morning, I drove home and listened to the ABC Perth Radio. As I pulled into the driveway, I heard some sad news that veteran sports commentator, Dennis Cometti has passed away. ABC Perth presenter, Mark Gibson was very emotional (given that he worked with Dennis Cometti at the Seven Network) a long time ago.

Dennis Cometti has done a lot of commentary for more than 50 years. He commentated on not just the AFL, but also the cricket and the Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 Olympics in swimming. In late 2001 (when Seven lost the AFL rights to Nine, Ten and Fox), Dennis Cometti joined the Nine Network in early 2002 and called the AFL. In addition, he also presented sports news on National Nine News Perth. During his stint at Nine, he also did the cricket commentary during the 2003-04 season. After Nine lost the rights to the AFL in 2006, Seven returned to AFL in 2007. Dennis Cometti returned to the Seven Network to call the AFL matches. And he stayed at the Seven Network until the end of 2016. After stepping down from the AFL commentary on Seven in 2016, he joined the WAFL broadcasts for the 2017 season. In late 2021, Dennis retired from sports commentary for good. After retiring, he was inducted into the Western Australian Hall of Fame.

Australia has lost one of its greats. Goodbye Dennis Cometti, you will be sadly missed from not just the Seven Network, but the whole sporting industry. Vale Dennis.

I will be playing Eric Bana’s ‘Out Of Bounds’ tomorrow on my show- that’s the closest Dennis had to a hit  I’m not sure if Billy Birmingham aka 12th Man ever did a parody (I can’t recall it).

RIP to one of the two great 1949 born Dennis’s of Quokkaland.

Nice choice, and appropriately rare.

I don’t recall Billy ever sending up Dennis - he did do Bruce McAvaney for both the Olympics and some AFL references in the Wired World of Sports, but not so much the AFL callers. Maybe he was a league man, maybe it was just because he sent up Channel Nine stars who didn’t have AFL for most of that period

Yes I’ve played ‘Bruce 2000’ before.

Very true, he did do some Ray Warren send ups. But none of AFL specific commentators other than Broooce at the Olympics like you said.

Dennis with his unque deep voice might have been a challenge to do?

Apparently woke up this morning not feeling too well said to the love of his life, Marie, I’m going to go back to bed for a little while and and unfortunately, he passed away.
