Actress Della Reese has died aged 86.

Sad loss l do remember in 1993 she was defeated in the final at Wimbledon and was distraught during the presentations and cried on the shoulder of the Duchess Of Kent, that was a big news story at the time, she finally won the Wimbledon title in 1998.

How quaint. A baby care manual written by a nun. My mother would fly into a fit of rage if she saw this given the appalling treatment she saw dished out to children by nuns in the convent she worked at before she had her own '70s children.

“Sister” could be a nurse?

Could be. Didn’t think of that. Can’t remember the last time I heard a nurse referred to as “sister”. Probably sadistic Sister Scott in The Young Doctors. One of those terms that was probably dropped for being sexist.

It fell out of practice as more men became nurses. There were also Matrons who became Nursing Unit Managers or NUMs.

I still had to call nurses sister in 2014 at school. Definitely still a thing.

Former Herald Sun journalist and author John Hamilton has died after a long illness at 76. Hamilton covered the Port Arthur massacre, the Bali bombings, the 2004 tsunami disaster, the Sydney Olympics, the 85th anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli, and accompanied the then Prime Minister John Howard on visits to Turkey, France, Israel and East Timor. He won Walkley Awards in 1967 and 1968, wrote three books about the Anzacs in World War I, and was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015.

Former senator and national Labor vice-president Steve Hutchins has died. Hutchins was a NSW senator from 1998 to 2011, and was the husband of Victorian government minister Natalie Hutchins.

US TV director Peter Baldwin has died aged 86. He won an Emmy award in 1989 for his work on The Wonder Years. His directing credits also included The Andy Griffiths Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Partridge Family.

Actor Rance Howard, father of director Ron Howard, has died aged 89. He appeared in many of his son’s films including Apollo 13, Splash, Cocoon and The Da Vinci Code.
