I’m shattered about Matthew Perry’s passing. It’s common knowledge that he’s had issues for quite some time but his Friend’s character was the main reason I watched the show and all the re-runs over and over again. Naturally funny, he was allowed to work with the writers on some of Chander’s lines, something none of the other cast were permitted to do. Gone way too soon. ---

Wow. When you first read these reports or see a name trending, there is a tendency to double check the sources, but unfortunately this is true. Chandler was one of the most iconic characters of television sit coms. RIP Matthew. ---

Gobsmacked when I saw the news, thought I’d managed to miss it all morning but then realised it’d actually only broken that hour. When I saw Matthew Perry and associated dominating trends, I thought for a sec ‘what’s going on’ but then immediately knew it must’ve been the worst before I clicked and sure enough 😢 Echoing others, he had publicly revealed his demons with the bottle and pills coming to light especially recently with his autobiography and it was always so sad he claimed he couldn’t recall anything from the final few seasons of _Friends_ (and you also had those like Elizabeth Hurley laughing at how bad he was on-set, they did a forgotten early 2000s movie together, when he’d actually just been in rehab and most unwell which is a shame to read). But he lit up the room with his memorable character of the cherished sitcom and one of hardly any shows to span generations, a truckload of fans of all ages will be crying today, like JeepesCreepers points to arguably one of the main reasons viewers flocked to the show, even if he wasn’t the ‘main’ star or had the fame later in life like Aniston and Cox. RIP 🙏 I expect this to be top headline, at least the commercials tonight, given Australia’s relationship with Chandler and one of the biggest TV shows ever, as well as front page (certainly partially) in at least the Sun and Telegraph etc tomorrow. Wonder if any pre emptions will be made (10 Peach ‘best of’ marathon tonight? Or one of his movies on another m/c or two?) Also personally, while I did enjoy Friends and have seen countless episodes over the years, I’m in the minority in that is was not my favourite show (not even close) but was on the otherhand an avid _Seinfeld_ fan (I think many are very much for one or the other depsite wide-recognition of both shows and constant friendly wars over time of which was the biggest or best), I’d even suggest his other works (while not a lot) particularly namely _Fools Rush In_, _The Whole Nine Yards_ and to a lesser extent _Three to Tango_ were really good, even if in part ‘vehicles’ for him and we saw both a similar character-actor but also different acting-chops from the different genres and themes from him. **However** of course I realise Friends’ global perpetual popularity and how beloved Perry was, anybody fan or not, would, with such calibre of a character and show. – _update_ Veteran entertainment scribe/correspondent the past decade in LA Michael Idato of Age/SMH has penned a piece the past half hour: > **[The darkly comic enigma who gave Chandler Bing his perfect smile](https://www.smh.com.au/culture/tv-and-radio/the-darkly-comic-enigma-who-gave-chandler-bing-his-perfect-smile-20231029-p5efvd.html)** > > Matthew Perry’s performance in Friends was a unique combination of charm and vulnerability. ---

I tuned-in to that via 10Play live streaming, as I wanted to see the latest news package, as always Bishop excells, it was a well-rounded, touching story, however she notably missed covering his other works (such as some films he starred in most noteworthy and these days considered a bit of a modern cult classic _The Whole Nine Yards_ often aired on TV too), not that is was a major point though, will see if other networks mention. ---

Interesting, in Tasmania it’s only just appearing now about 5th. Gaza, Protests in Aus about Palestine, the memorial service for the children killed in the shed fire in Vic last week, Federal Politics and now Perry just before the first break. ---
