Nine Radio (Talk)

3 months after the sale went through was the original timeframe stated for 2CH moving out of the Macquarie building, so that would be mid-April. Not heard any more about this. Most timeframes are very flexible!!

Rex Hunt’s Footy Nightline actually started tonight at 11pm Melbourne time after the AFL season opener. Apart from its regular Friday night timeslot, it looks like it will also be broadcast after every Thursday night match covered by 3AW.

Steve Price is filling in for John Michael Howson who is away ill on Sunday Morning on 3AW this morning.

John Michael Howson had a stroke a few weeks ago hence his absence from 3AW. This morning former Premier Denis Napthine filled in for him. He will return to the airwaves next week.

There will be an extended edition of Nightline with Philip and Simon (with guest presenters Luke Dennehy and Fiona Byrne from the Herald Sun) tonight from 7.30pm to midnight AEST, as they broadcast from the green room of the Good Friday Appeal Super Show at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, interviewing guests and performers.

Howson told the Herald Sun he suffered a minor stroke during dinner on St Patrick’s Day (March 17). It had not affected his speech and brain power but weakened the left side leg and arm, and he is walking with a stick.

Bruce Mansfield has been honoured by 3AW on the first anniversary of his death. Mansfield and Philip Brady used to broadcast Nightline from the second studio at the station, and now that studio will now be named after Mansfield.

It was hilarious hearing Hadley lose it today due to the technical problems at the beginning of the OB. Sadly it’s been edited out of the podcast.

Most broadcasters have the wisdom to handle those situations on-air in a professional manner, usually making lite of the problems (while they may make their displeasure known to those who caused the issue off-air). Hadley just puts it all out there.

He’s probably gone to ‘pull someone’s ears’ and tell John Brennan ‘this guy’s lost his support’.

The good thing is that Justin could easily return serve twice as good as Ray.

2GB news report right now:

“A driver has been jailed for three years after a horrific accident three years ago”

Try:

“A driver has been jailed for three years after a horrific accident that occurred in 2014”

Sydney apartment development company Dyldam has been a major sponsor of Ray Hadley’s 2GB show for many years, but the company has not been going so well recently with some developments collapsing and issues with the ATO. Subcontractors stung by the collapses complained to Hadley so he has refused to accept anymore advertising from Dyldam.

According to the Herald Sun, Nicole Denton signed off as 3AW content director on Friday.

Craig Willis and Justin Smith filled in for Ross and John on 3AW breakfast today. It’s rare for Willis (best known as MC for so many sporting events) to host a radio show let alone a high-rating breakfast program.

When one of the breakfast men had time off due to a bad back/back operation, Craig filled in and was a great addition. He’s much more than a good voice who reads scripts, talk radio is raw, requires you to think on your own feet, only so much producers can do and Craig went well above this.

6PR breaches complaints-handling codes

Radio 6PR Perth Pty Ltd, the licensee of 6PR in Perth, has breached the complaints-handling obligations of the Commercial Radio Codes of Practice and Guidelines 2013 (the code).

The Australian Communications and Media Authority’s investigation concerned two complaints by a 6PR listener about a 14 September 2016 broadcast that aired on 6PR Mornings. The complaints were sent via fax to 6PR and later via 6PR’s website online complaint form. No response was provided by the licensee.

Code 5.5 of the 2013 Code requires that the licensee use its best endeavours to respond to complaints within 30 business days of receipt.

In addition, code 5.5 creates an unqualified obligation on licensees to conscientiously consider and respond substantively to a complaint made in accordance with the code.

The licensee advised the ACMA that the failure to respond to these complaints within the required timeframe was the result of oversights and internal technical errors with its online complaint system.

It has also advised that it has taken action to address the problems identified and to prevent a similar incident occurring in future.

A new Commercial Radio Industry Code of Practice commenced on 15 March 2017. Clearer complaint-handling procedures are a key community safeguard provided in the new code.

A copy of the investigation is available on the ACMA website version of this release.

News today that PE firm, TPG Capital has an offer for Fairfax has me wondering about what’s in the deal for their radio shareholding?

That of the approx 55% share in MRN that Fairfax holds.

Singo and his investor mates viewed the Fairfax buy in as their partial exit strategy, their cash out from a company that in public company terms is quite illiquid, not much turnover of shares.

ABC’s The World Today has now reported that TPG Capital would only buy online assets such as the cash cow Domain and the flagship mastheads The Age, SMH and AFR. The rest of the company, including the MRN shareholding would be retained by what’s left of Fairfax.

This is a shame as it would be good for radio for someone to buy out Singo and his mates, revitalise the board, bring new management in and if necessary, sell some stations if there was an external interest.

Besides 3AW which has a sizeable share of the under 55 market, MRN consists of stations (including GB) where their best result is 65 plus. This is an audience that is literally dying off.

The modern day ownership of MRN which has extended to Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth suffers the same problem that 2GB has had from its first year back at #1, a lack of external interest in the stations. Never anyone serious to buy the stations. For a public company, they have done a great job at making their assets look as unattractive to takeover or offer as possible.
