Kyle away for today’s last show of the year.
Cooper Johns filled in for him again.
Hopeless.
From the Sunday Telegraph:
Executives at the Australian Radio Network (ARN) spent a large amount of time in November developing creative plans on how to pay the larger salaries of Jackie ‘O’ Henderson and Kyle Sandilands from 2025.
Popular KIIS radio personality Mitch Churi was made redundant, and the company’s chief programming boss – Duncan Campbell – attended a NSW Nationals event to pitch ARN’s costing-saving case to develop legislation that would allow the radio company to be freed of laws that require their radio stations to produce news locally.
“We’re forced to employ journalists in every market. They have to be in that market. And some of those markets are very, very small. And we’re forced to do these local news bulletins … and sometimes there’s not the news to justify that,” Mr Campbell said.
I’m assuming that’s a legacy requirement of ARN purchasing Grant Broadcasters?
SCA Newcastle was one of the hubs for smaller markets for news - our people did national, capital cities and rural towns/markets.
If it is the case then I have some sympathy for ARNs request, especially in places like regional SA, where it would be difficult to produce substantial local news daily and where a state hub would suffice.
Imagine being the duo who is responsible for all these people losing their jobs to plump up your own salary.
Indeed and I’m sorry Duncan, but your poor business sense isn’t the governments fault.
Just imagine that.
Imagine that you’re the cause of your industry colleagues losing their jobs, so you can be ridiculously overpaid.
Back when 2UE was overpaying their underrating announcers, they still managed to keep everyone in a job. So why can’t ARN?
As I see it, if ARN can’t/couldn’t afford K&J, then they should never had renewed their contract.
Sometimes the workplace needs to push back a little.
Going back to the 2UE example, IIRC it was when Laws retired from 2UE that the remaining announcers had their contracts reviewed and adjusted based on their ratings results.
You can’t be paid $200m to be bottom of the pack in Melbourne. If I were Jase & Lauren, I’d be using K&J’s contract as a benchmark as to what they should be getting paid.
Correct. Nobody forced ARN to buy stations in such small markets and then blow all their money on “talent” they can’t afford.
This has been happening since time immemorial.
Cut the lower paid staff to pay the top ‘talent’.
Speaks to poor ARN business sense - got spooked by K&J being linked with leaving/a return to 2Day.
Bit hard to rip and read from a newspaper when none exists too.
I get the economic realities of it, but this is really starting to stretch the premise of having local radio.
Not to mention how critical Kyle was of SCA when they networked hit a few years back
The Nationals continue to be turkeys voting for Christmas if they rubber stamp that kind of thing, give up on local news on their monopoly local radio station so that the Sydney breakfast show can have more cash…
ARN would be under the trigger event rules, the first part is already finished - two years of maintaining staffing levels. The rest does apply - but there’s nothing obvious that requires a local journalist, just 62.5 minutes a week of new “local stories and material important to the local community” - and lots of that can just be weather reports.
Having worked in news in those SA regional markets, this is absolutely not the case. Plenty of local news and sport to be covered.
That’s awesome to hear!
