Agree. It was a poisoned chalice he took on, was always going to end in tears, and he was the fall guy. His whole team was never united and was doomed from the start. Boris and Truss are the real disgrace.

Itā€™s ironic considering how graceless he was during the campaign (and indeed whilst he was PM). Maybe his party wouldnā€™t have lost so many seats had he been like that as PMā€¦

David Cameron and Theresa May are a disgrace too because Cameron ruined the UK economy with austerity programme to try to boost economic growth by slashing government spending and privatisation of public services but that fell flat in the end, this why the UK is a poor man of Western Europe. Theresa May is hopeless at delivering Brexit

Sunak bringing back Cameron into the fold only reiterated the point, that nothing has changed.

Thatā€™s literally what a democracy is. If you start controlling who can run you take away democracy and eventually it will be abused and there would only be a 2 party system. Of course itā€™s a farce but that just shows itā€™s a democracy and anyone can get into politics if they want.

Good to see the French reject that far right Le Pen and her goons once again. Clearly despite their bravados most people prefer to see someone comparatively sensible in charge rather than the far right.

Some very clever tactical strategies from the left. I donā€™t think itā€™s an indication of rejection but unification.

Why were seeing predictions suggesting otherwise. Did the pre-election polls get it totally wrong again?

From what I have read some candidates dropped out to not split votes among centre left leaning voters.

I think sentiments around the far right and their brand of populism fuelled that. When push comes to shove though clearly common sense prevailed. This is one of the occasions that it was good the polls were wrong.

Unification of the centre-left to reject the far right

I donā€™t think the polls were wrong. By all account they got the votes projected. Over 200 candidates pulled out of the second and third rounds to unify the left. Tactically is was brilliant. The polls couldnā€™t predict that happening.

Le Pen is a hard pro-Putinist; she once met the Russian leader in 2017 and remained silent over Putin regimeā€™s brutality in Ukraine. French leaders and half of the nation, in contrast, has been condemning Putin and his regime since the 2022 overall war in Ukraine. If only Le Pen had any view changes on Putin rather than kept silent, she and her comrades could won two consecutive elections

While there are flaws in the UK system, itā€™s refreshing to see that there can be a change of Government and the incoming Government can start going about their business quickly.
