Gold Network

The forced laughter is so annoying. It’s on all the FM breakfast shows except for smooth in Sydney. I’ve noticed that on Gold the forced fun has been ramped up 215% in the last few months. I can still hear them screaming form Melbourne when I turn the radio off.

All of that forced laughter makes me think “WTF when I listen”

On the plus side, it won’t help Melbourne ratings either. The fake bullshit appeals to neither market.

Nice to see they’re aware moving them off Sydney Breakfast was a mistake

Jonesy and Amanda were vocal about not wanting to leave Breakfast. They’re just continuing to do so. I bet ARN execs wouldn’t be happy with Jonesy posting that comment.

It’s a light hearted joke.

Nobody said it wasn’t funny. Jonesy is funny.

Jonesy is funny. Amanda casually ripping into him is funnier.

A quick look at the self-inflicted ratings decline of WS/Gold and its battle with smooth over the last 20 months.

In Survey 7 of 2024, the WS breakfast was rating an 11.3 and smooth was on 8.3. Today Gold rates a 6.5 and smooth has bumped up to 12.2%

As for mornings, in Survey 7 2024 WS was on 12.7 (No.1 for the slot) and smooth on a respectable 11.3. Today Gold has slipped to 6.9% and smooth has surged to 15.4% (No.1!).

Apart from networking the breakfast show from Melbourne (KIIS, MMM and 2UE can attest to this as a mistake) and losing the WS brand in Sydney, what else has 101.7 done to alienate its listeners since 2024?

Interesting analysis. It doesn’t paint a great picture of what ARN has done to WS in such a short time. I also think the music has deteriorated in that time too. They have tried to turn it into some sort of Triple M clone, but it’s mainly just the same lame overflogged songs, just slightly newer. I really don’t see why they make it so hard, there are so many great classic hits stations that have gone “younger” but have really nailed the playlist. Stations like K-Earth and KOLA in Los Angeles have awesome playlists, even though they play a very tight classic hits format which has evolved younger over recent years. ARN need to understand they’re not going to compete with a station like Smooth unless they get the music right. But they always seem to think the music is secondary to their “talent”.

And yet some still feel Christian will succeed in Sydney.

Cruise is such a cool name for a radio station. So is smooth.

I just asked my favourite google AI assistant who was the first Australian radio station to call itself “Gold - and then their frequency”. Evidently it was 2SM in 1994 when it became known as Gold 1269. Correct me if my assistant is wrong.

So now Cruise 1323 is going to become Gold 1323.

More like Recycle 1323.

If ARN is going to convert Cruise 1323 to Gold1323. Adelaide will lose a classic hits station playing the 60’s-80’s by the looks of things

Cruise 1323 ahead of the switch to GOLD 1323 in a few weeks time has added a few 90’s songs to it’s playlist, Breakfast At Tiffany’s - Deep Blue Something, Young Hearts Run Free - Kym Mazelle, Mr. Jones - Counting Crows, Buses and Trains - Bachelor Girl & Who Do You Think You Are - Spice Girls all heard so far today.

It looks like there is nothing about the rebranding of Cruise 1323 to Gold 1323 on Cruise 1323 website by the looks of things

ARN should start Gold1323.com.au now with a coming October 1 message. That will be helpful

In hindsight I’m kind of glad now that ARN sold 4KQ, because that would definitely have been their fate too.
As it turned out it’s enabled Brisbane to retain a really good classic hits stations in 4BH. I’m not sure both 4BH and Gold 693 would have survived/thrived.

ARN’s digital team have lately never been in tune with what’s happening on air.

Example: CADA's Endless Summer

ARN should move Cruise to DAB in Adelaide rather than killing it off and have it as IheartRadio station as well. Maybe replace CWRemix if they do not have the bandwidth.

The joy of offshoring everything to a company that doesn’t care…

Also the competition is for an endless summer so by their logic, it’s still summer…

The problem is they won’t. They’re obsessed with anything that in any way competes with their “main” station. When they sold 4KQ they should have put that format on DAB straight away too, but didn’t.

Cruise would be an ideal station to roll out nationally for them on DAB, but they won’t.
