Are you oblivious or ignorant? He wasn’t “some bloke”, he was Phil O’Neil. He was born in the UK but been in Australia for the majority of his life so sounds Aussie.
Ugly Phil was his nickname and Jackie O has had that nickname since she was married to him and was therefore Jackie O’Neil.
They hosted nights at Triple M from 1993 but then Austereo moved them to Fox Melbourne and the Hot 30 Countdown went national and became a massive hit until 2000. After their marriage break up, Phil left and Kyle Sandilands replaced him.
Ugly Phil worked briefly in the UK but returned to Australia for the launch of Nova where he had the number one Drive show. He left at the end of 2002 citing difficulties with management.
He them moved to Triple M in 2003 for the short lived The Phil O’Neil Show. He returned to Ttiple M in 2008 for late night and breakfast in Brisbane with Sami Lukis in 2009.
He worked at a number of other stations until he joined 2WS ftom 2020 to 2025.
So not just “some bloke”.

He moved to Triple M in 2002 for a national talk / new rock show at night, which was very good and the precursor to Spoonman at nights.
I was listening to Frank Skinner the other day and he said most British comedians can’t stand Australian audiences because they’re not clever enough to understand nuance, sarcasm and facetiousness. ‘They take everything far too literally’ he said.
You’re overstating this whole notion of ‘Melbourne exceptionalism’. The Australian suburban sprawl is the same the whole country wide. Suburbanites are like Kath n Kims regardless of whether they shop at Fountaingate or Miranda. The mere fact that OC can do so well suggests Melbourne ain’t so special.
Plus the fact that OC has stated:
‘I want the show to be more widely available’
Let’s face it, not only was Christian nationwide in the UK, he was on 60s, 70, 80s, 90s, 00s, Classic Rock and absolutely on the main.
And any idea about him pandering to the so-called ‘parochial’ Melbourne market will be totally ditched.
I literally emphasised the word “can”. I didn’t say it was a given.
You obviously know nothing about Sydney and very little about Australia. There’s a wide gap between Fountaingate and Miranda.
Miranda has Dior, Polo Ralph Lauren and David Jones whereas Fountaingate has Harris Scarfe and The Reject Shop.

I think the reason he has done so well in Melbourne is because he’s adopted Melbourne. He took us all on a journey to become a Melbournian.

It’s funny actually. Mediaspy is an industry forum where people in and around media can talk. And there’s nothing wrong with little ‘in jokes’ like ‘unattractive pom’ and ‘some bloke’. Clearly referencing Ugly Phil and clearly having a laugh.
Nothing worse than some keyboard warrior outside of the industry who gets all carried away and all uppity and can’t even get his wikipedia quotes right.
But back to my analysis…
Look, for those who want to have serious discussion, it’s true, outside of a few inner suburbs, all of our cities are pretty much the same.
Which means that ARN look set to have the top breakfast shows (number one and two) in Sydney and Melbourne within 12 months.
