The Summer 500 should be a chance to play around a bit and have some fun. Every tenth track at least should be something that listeners haven’t heard in a long, long time.
If the demo is 25-54 then throw in some:
Oops up! - Snap!
American Boy - Estelle
Heaven - DJ Sammy
Black & Gold - Sam Sparro
Set you free - N-trance
Hippychick - Soho
Call my name - Cheryl
And even just some great summer songs:
Cruel Summer - Bannarama/AoB
Summer of love - B52s
Here comes the sun - George Harrison
Summertime sadness - LDR
1999 - Charli xcx
If Gold want to contemporize a bit, why don’t they play stuff like Love Somebody / Morgan Wallen? Released in 2024 it’s a country rock track that gets played a lot on Breeze at the moment, alongside the 80s-heavy main playlist (with some 60s and 90s). Sounds great. Instead they play only the lamest 2000’s stuff like Sk8ter Boi and think that’s going to appeal because they’re not “brand new” songs. They need to have some balls. That’s what got Smooth where they are originally. Arguably Smooth isn’t what it was in that regard, but that’s what people loved about it originally.
Not really the point. I was mentioning two songs that didn’t flow at all. And how many head bangers would then get turned off by something soft and whispered.
Once upon a time jingles would smooth that transition.
I didn’t mind at all. In fact I thought it was kinda hilarious.
Gotta remember that people in this forum are radio geeks and will tolerate a lot more than the general public which rules by the off or change station buttons.
Yes I think the flow is important. It doesn’t mean that the consecutive need to be too similar, it just means they should flow. The tempos can change but just not too “clangingly”. I personally don’t want to hear Thunderstruck / ACDC next to Celine Dion. But there’s a middle ground that’s easy to find if you’re a talented music programmer.
… they should play People watching - Sam Fender, currently receiving lots of airplay in the UK and Aotearoa. Charting #4 and #24 respectively. Has a really cool hot AC upbeat feel.
I guess a showrunner’s job these days involves so much more than just the show itself, but all the related content that goes with it. I think this is where there is some real potential for the COCS to extend its footprint. More media spots on morning television, more events based sporting promos and another book perhaps?
Looking at the Gold101.7 website, it looks like they’ve opted to keep the 13 WSFM studio number (for now at least). One remaining homage to their heritage.
It reminds me when Talking Lifestyle had the openline number 13 12 83 which translated to 131 2UE (even after they killed off the 2UE brand).
