Ghosts Australia

Between TAR/BB (?) possibly?

Ghosts Just Wanna Have Fun!

Ghosts Australia. Premieres Sunday, 2 November At 8.30pm On 10 And Paramount+.

Things are about to get seriously spooky and spirited, when Ghosts Australia floats onto screens on Sunday, 2 November, with a double premiere episode at 8.30pm on 10, and all eight episodes available to stream on Paramount+.

Who says the afterlife can’t be dramatic, hilarious, and just a little bit awkward? Based on the critically acclaimed British comedy series, that has also been a huge hit in its US version, the local adaptation is full of haunts, humour and so much heart.

When Kate (Tamala: Cleverman, Nowhere Boys) and Sean (Rowan Witt: Totally Completely Fine, Book Of Mormon) inherit Ramshead Manor, a dilapidated country estate, they see a fresh start to live together and transform it into a boutique hotel. But the real test isn’t the renovations - it’s the six ghostly residents haunting the place.

After hitting her head, Kate develops the ability to see the dead, and soon after, the couple are dragged into a whirlwind of hauntings, tantrums, and century-old secrets that refuse to die. As Kate and Sean try to fix up the house, they end up fixing ghost problems instead - putting their relationship through the wringer but ultimately finding a new kind of family.

The hilarious ensemble of ghosts are brought to life by Mandy McElhinney (Love Child, Paper Giants: Magazine Wars), Brent Hill (Hamilton, School of Rock), Ines English (Last Days of the Space Age, The Last Anniversary), Michelle Brasier (Thank God You’re Here, Aunty Donna), George Zhao (The Family Law, Gold Diggers), and Jackson Tozer (Ricky Stanicky, Deadloch). The series also features guest appearances from Leah Purcell (Wentworth, High Country), Helen Thomson (Elvis, Collin From Accounts) and Peter Rowsthorn (Kath and Kim, Thank God You’re Here).

Ghosts Australia is produced by BBC Studios Productions Australia for 10 and Paramount+ with major production investment from Screenwest and the Western Australian Production Attraction Incentive. Based on the original UK series Ghosts, produced by Monumental Television in association with Them There for BBC One. Distributed by BBC Studios.

@JBar wont be happy with this! lol :joy:

I knew it would go to streaming first.

Seems like a shitty version of the same British and American show. Nobody will watch it so does not matter. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Don’t know why they even bothered.

I like both those versions and will watch this. Hopefully it’s good and gets multiple seasons.

Sunday 8:30? TAR would be finished by Nov 2 so what do they have from 7pm to 8:30? I think if they were going to do double episode to start maybe it should have been 8pm? Unless that’s the day the Voice has its finale and 10 wants to show this after that finishes

It’s already a scheduling failure for episode 3 assuming the Big Brother premiere goes until 9 or 9:30pm then Ghosts will be on pretty late. Clearly made for Paramount Plus and airing on 10 as an afterthought.

I don’t believe that is true. It is supposed to be a strong option out of Big Brother. HYBPA and Cheap Seats sometimes on at 9pm or 9.10pm following reality. They always know that. They looking for a strong show to bring people out of the reality. This is to draw Ghosts to potentially big audience and give it a good run.

I understand the theory behind it and maybe if it were a little earlier in the year it would work but I’m not convinced BB will rate well so late into the year let alone Ghosts after 9pm.

Weather in QLD is already sitting in the 30 degrees mark the last two weeks and its only going to get hotter. I just dont see BB being a hit so late in the year. Could be wrong but we will see.

10 obviously putting everything into BB and live noms and all that - huge media launch, etc. They obviously believe it will do well and if it does then the Ghosts slot makes sense. However, like anything, if it fails then that will bring down anything after.

… for a First Nations character, death and spirits necessarily comes with layers and complexities which need addressing. There is colonial history, there are 250 language groups or “mobs”, cultural sensitivity around deceased persons, and the importance of Aboriginal sprituality.

It’s why the show’s Writer’s Room included Steph Tisdell and Shontell Leah Ketchell, two First Nations writers. Under Executive Producer and writer Josh Mapleston, the Australian adaptation landed on a First Nations character as a “Breather” aka living character, to avoid one Indigenous ghost awkwardly trying to represent.

“It’s a huge undertaking to try and represent all mobs at all times. As much as that needs to be at the forefront of our minds, and we need to be trying to do that, in this story, I think it’s a far more interesting take, and there’s more to explore doing it through Kate’s eyes as a young First Nations woman, rather than taking the other route,” she explains.

Really enjoyed the first two episodes, sure there are a significant number of similarities to the UK and US versions, but more than enough Australian changes.
