Whilst we’re on the topic of Capital/Ten Capital, I just discovered this clip from Ten Capital News in Canberra from around late 2001 (judging by the story item below), not long before the bulletin got axed:

It’s interesting to see the graphics used in the bulletin, which was based on the then-current Ten News look in 2000-05.

Thanks to [‘kommissartodd06’](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCs_JYqtkypdCUo2BjCBU5_g) for the upload.

Love this Facebook anecdote regarding _Studio 10_’s Susie Elelman on how she got her start in television.

The same user has uploaded 40+ minutes of news footage about the collapse of Ansett. Haven’t watched the lot, but given the first story is from pre-Kochie Sunrise, there’s sure to be some gold:

Coonabarabran is slightly closer (as the crow flies) to Dubbo than Tamworth. Dubbo relayed Orange pretty much from the get-go.

Possibly one of the first bulletins that Seven News Sydney had their final new set for the Epping studios in service for?

Also some rare Early 2000s footage from ABC News Canberra in that bunch!

He appears to be a guest in the first live cross there…

He was one of the journos reporting on Ansett’s last flight for Seven. The collapse of Ansett was a rather big story at the time so it wouldn’t have been unusual to have more than one reporter covering the story.

Slightly overshadowed by another event in some far flung part of the world, but I seem to remember there being a little bit of Ansett coverage.

Probably more so that Coonabarabran seemed more “Northern NSW” than “Southern NSW” geographically.

At the time I never realised that the CWN-6 transmitter was so far north of Dubbo, I always figured it would be south of Gilgandra somewhere.

No wonder there was a UHF relay installed much closer to Dubbo upon aggregation.

> No, that’s not true mate. “Capital Ten” started in 1988 just before aggregation. Canberra had the X logo, same as all the metros. The X logo was used for Capital in the Canberra region and Illawarra until the change to 10TV Australia (the ‘regional’ logo is below). All the promos used in the ad breaks were pure TEN branding and the Canberra produced news was TEN News.

OK. I’ve never heard of it called “Capital Ten” during the pre aggregation or X days. The “X” logo was always “Capital Television” as far as I knew.

Although I will take your point with regards to the 10 TV Australia stage. Capital seemed to be a bit confused themselves what they were doing.

This magazine ad had the “10 Capital” logo but the ad copy refers only to “Capital Television”

 ![Capital_1990](https://mediaspy-org-s3.s3.dualstack.ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/original/3X/1/7/175037553c006664bbaf32a5a7168b416c11f865.jpg)

And likewise, this letterhead from 1989 also identified them as “Capital Television” – although one of their letters mentioned the name “Capital 10 TV Australia” which was quite a mouthful. Perhaps the instability at Ten at that time caused some issues with consistency at Capital?!?

> QTV changed to Ten Queensland for the same reason as Capital 7 changed to Capital Ten: it was owned by the Ten Network at the time.

I think it was actually the other way around. Telecasters North Queensland (QTV) was one of the consortium to buy the Ten Network among CanWest in the early 1990s. That’s when QTV became Ten Queensland.

> Ah ok, I seem to remember some mention of Ansett on the day (of 9/11, which is my second oldest memory). I didn’t know they stumbled on after that.

It’s a week I remember well unfortunately, being a leader at a camp and being responsible but then realising just how young we all were when something completely foreign like 9/11 occurs and all of a sudden a bunch of near adults become teenagers just wanting to be home with parents again and back in our own comforts.

So, I remember 3 events that week. 1 was on the Sunday evening I think and there was a fire at Eddie McGuire’s house, probably not big but I remember we talked a bit about it. The Wednesday was the September 11 stuff which I can remember seeing a bit of coverage about on the day but as we were at a camp we needed to make sure the kids didn’t find out (some managed to on the Friday which was the final day) but I did see bits of the coverage throughout the day and we had some people keeping us informed.

In the early hours of Friday morning was when Ansett and their affiliates (Kendell, Hazelton etc…) were grounded and the news that the airline had collapsed. There were ongoing things with Solomon Lew and Lindsay Fox formed the Tesna bid (Anset backwards - fairly apt) which looked like it was going to raise the airline from the ashes but this failed and they pulled the plug in early 2002. I remember at the time there was a lot of doubt about whether they could do it and whether they were truly interested. There was also a lot of blame towards Air New Zealand for stripping Ansett. The big winner was Virgin Blue who instantly expanded before Jetstar was even a thought (there were still a few more cheap airlines to come and go before Jetstar I think).
Regional Express Airlines (Rex) came about from the ashes of Kendell and Hazelton and must be a success, so despite the regional operations failing with the Ansett collapse, those airlines managed to rebuild and restructure and survive.

Back to TV History, when I got back from the camp I was it, it was over 48 hours since the 9/11 attacks and normal programming was starting to return (no multichannels back then) but Nine/WIN was still doing rolling coverage but now with the added Ansett news.
