Data © OzTAM Pty Limited 2021. The Data may not be reproduced, published or communicated (electronically or in hard copy) in whole or in part, without the prior written consent of OzTAM. “Overnight” figures include “Live” (programs broadcast during the 2am-2am broadcast day) and “As Live” (programs recorded and then watched within the same broadcast day). “Consolidated” figures include Live, As Live and “Time Shift” (programs recorded and then watched within seven days of the initial broadcast).

The Olympics off to a great start for Seven with almost 50% share on the main channel and +2 million watching the opening ceremony.

The favourable time zone a big help to the numbers. By comparison 1.6 million watched Rio live then another 945,000 watch the replay. For London it was 1.755 million live and 1.31 million the replay.

Again some big numbers for news including +400k for Nine’s afternoon bulletin (4pm east coast 5pm in SA and WA).

Despite the woeful coverage, ratings were pretty good for the opening ceremony.

Just hoping that the hogwash that was last night doesn’t spread into their general coverage.

Good numbers for the Opening ceremony of Tokyo Olympics. This helped seven win all cities
7 news at 6:30pm didn’t air into Perth.

Champagne bottles will be popping at Seven today, no doubt.

Massive audience for the Tokyo Olympics opening ceremony.

Seven News lost over the hour in Sydney and Brisbane.

Opening ceremony did great for Seven. Clearly invoking genocides and atrocities helps ratings - maybe SBS should take note as way to spice up the intro to their Worldwatch bulletins.

Massive numbers for Seven with the Opening Ceremony, Over 2 million people watching is great for the long duration of the Ceremony and a 49.4% share. Nice.

Poor SBS and their shares. lol.

When getting excited about the Tokyo numbers, remember this. It was in a time zone friendly country, there has been massive hype over it for 18 months or more, and 12 million viewers are in lockdown.

And?

Yes that’s the context but same could be said about any hyped up program in prime time - but doesn’t take away that more than 2 million people watched and stayed up past midnight when there is thousands of other things they could stream or watch.

What an odd post. It may be more timezone friendly than some others but ratings are pretty massive considering it ran for 4 hours till 1am. This Olympics definitely has not had massive hype for 18 months, quite the opposite IMO. The lead up has had the least buzz that I can ever remember given no crowds, many athletes not competing or able to go and even questions up until days ago whether or not it will even happen. It wasn’t the most exciting Opening Ceremony either.

Also this 12million+ in lockdown comment should apply to every other show on television too, right?

I don’t mean this to be offensive to the Japanese, but between that pared-back opening ceremony and Jo Griggs’ “commentary,” I didn’t need my melatonin last night.

Got home from work at 9, switched on, was bored beyond belief by 9.40 and dead to world before 10.

Weekend Sunrise this morning was a better watch… but between 9am and 10.30am, top heavy with interviews, is another snore-fest.

Worth Staying up til 1am just to see Naomi Osaka lit the Cauldron.

It has been in the news almost daily. Unfortunately for the wrong reasons.

Exactly my point. Thanks for noting it.

And Adelaide had more than 200,000 viewers watching a programme (a post-9pm one, too).

If you live long enough, you see it all!

Seven have sent through a media release but it is difficult to share because it highlights almost everything that is not permitted by OzTAM  Peak audiences, audience reach and national viewing numbers, commercial share. It is also in a form that doesn’t allow selective editing to get it past the OTAM rules.

A couple of points - “Seven’s highest prime time share this year” and “biggest television audience this year”. Seven have promised some more info, so hopefully it can be posted.

I had to remind many of my family and friends that it was even on last night. Sadly being in lockdown a lot of people avoid the news or their focus is more on COVID stuff when it comes to news. Plus people have access to so much more choice these days (digital channels, streaming services etc) so considering everything it did extremely well.

You’re right Chris. People have way more choice. But this is big event TV. I was just pointing out the reasons it should have got the number of viewers it did, and that it shouldn’t have been a surprise. It’s a bit like being amazed when State Of Origin or the AFL Grand Final get around 2 million viewers!

Like TV Cynic, I can’t post numbers. But there was nothing like 2 million watching at 1am… or even midnight. But yes, it did well, as expected.

It’s freely available on Seven’s website, so what’s the issue exactly?
Can we post a link to it?
