Seven takes out another Friday, it’s 17th straight win, despite dropping from last week’s share. The lost audience went to SBS that was up by 2 week-on-week.

It was another big week for news, the first week this year that all bulletins of Seven and Nine at 6pm have exceeded 1 million viewers across the five markets. Nine’s Afternoon News again in the top 20 with multiple ABC News entries in the multichannel listings.

AFL was down from last week by 100k while the close NRL game was well up on recent results. The debut of ABC’s new Friday night shows Movin’ to the Country and Dream Gardens did well to retain Gardening Australia’s audience. That saw The Living Room miss the top 20, down 30k from last week.

Seven News Melbourne went backwards this week… could it be the absence of Peter Mitchell who is currently on leave?

The Living Room misses out of the top 20.

ABC’s new lifestyle offering did better than i thought. Not much difference withouht Gardening Australia.

What is good for Seven Melbourne though, is that the 6:30 period is still propping their numbers up to be competitive. Guess viewers are still keen for news and weather from Seven - or they were keen for the AFL!

What’s the WTD figures?

How long can the living room last. It wouldn’t be cheap. They need to move it or Lose it.

They ruined it when they changed the format. They got rid of the parts people liked about the old format and tried to rework it and now it’s bordering on unwatchable.

Along with The Living Room, I reckon Better Homes & Gardens could potentially face the axe sometime in the next year or so.

Between the loss of several popular presenters, Seven West Media selling off Pacific Media (publishers of the BH&G magazine) a while back and ratings below 500k metro viewers, surely you now have to wonder if Seven would get more Friday night viewers with a movie in the markets which don’t see AFL on the main channel…

Difference is that Better Homes and Gardens is a heritage brand and still has a group of loyal fans. The Living Room basically threw the baby out of the bath water when they did their revamp and now it resonates with hardly anyone.

Although it must be making money from all the product placement. It’s just one hour advertorial. That’s got to be the reason why 10 took it in house.

Total people is not the entire story. The show is very competitive in the key demos and valuable as a vehicle for product placement and sponsorship.

And with Better Homes and Gardens, sure, it’s not doing 1m+ metro and No. 1 program like is once often was on a Friday night, but if Seven were to get rid of it, what would then fill 7pm - 8:30pm and especially draw-in viewers in NRL markets? It’s been a big network advantage over others for many years now and they risk shares/ratings crashing even further.

As Cynic mentioned this morning, their umpteenth consecutive Friday win, yes Seven News and AFL, but BH&G is also a part of that.

Look at all the stuff Nine, 10 and ABC have tried to throw at the timeslot over the past 16 years at least.

I know that many magazines have faced that axe in recent years, so do Better Homes and Gardens have a magazine out (monthly)? The should could last that little bit longer because of its long history on Seven. Likewise with Gardening Australia (currently on a mid-year break). The Living Room unfortunately lost its edge once it changed its format, which was out of its hands.

Also, with the Graham Norton Show on a break at the moment, Ten doesn’t offer much on Friday nights post 8.30pm. Just repeats of a few comedic-type variety shows. Hence the low shares.

The magazine folding shouldn’t impact on the television show.

On any night aside from Monday’s and occasional ally Thursday’s when gogglebox is on. The rest of their post reality tentpoles is a disaster.

Maybe tv stations should stop broadcasting after 9pm Thursday’s and start again at 5pm Sundays……go back to a test pattern like we had in the 70’s
