The Australian Open tennis helped give Nine another overnight ratings win, with Second placed Seven very competitive just one point behind.

Nine won in Sydney and Melbourne with Seven leading the other markets including Perth were Nine ranked fourth. Nine, however, won the key demo groups by a bigger margin.

Nine’s share was down 11 points from the previous week with the two night sessions averaging in the low 500,000s compared to 1 million last Friday. The tennis did, however, rank as the top non-news programming.

Next best prime time results were Vera and Gardening Australia on ABC and Better Homes and Gardens on Seven.

On another low rating night, Seven’s afternoon news and Sunrise made the top 20 for the second consecutive Friday.

Should be a lesson to TCN not to mess with their 6pm news.

Seven News saw its audience increasing in all cities except Sydney at 6.30pm local time, when Nine News finished.

The debut of Super Rugby on the Nine Network did well, boosting 9Gem’s share from 1.6% last Friday to 3.3% last night.

Nine just won over Seven by 1.4% thanks to the Tennis and Super rugby (GEM). However it was a different story, Nine Perth finishing in 4th place. Nine Perth continued to struggle in the west for many years.
There was no Nine News at 6:30pm due to tennis. This saw Seven news winning the 6:30pm slot.
In Perth, Super Rugby outrated Adelaide and Melbourne markets.

Nine’s Super Rugby did well for the opening round. Will see if it hovers around that mark in coming weeks though. The Australian Open did well, as expected. The extended “pre-match” didn’t add much though.

Ten’s Living Room Repeat snuck into the top 20. Should have been new episodes.

Would have liked to see the Mastermind Final rate a little higher though.

Based on these main channel shares and Cynic’s analysis, I’m presuming:

Seven News having a monopoly at 6:30pm last night saw a massive win for 30min, as well as BH&G (while low) being competitive, an umpteenth re-run of “Con Air” (while also low) still made the Top 20 being competitive from its run time and late night share (Aus Open match finished nearly 10pm - Seven’s movie went for over an hour longer) and of course the Perth market being so dominant?

However, all of that still mustn’t have been any match for the tennis, especially those middle hours (7:30pm - 10pm) and the Melbourne market absolutely dominating for Nine this fortnight?

Interesting to hear Nine still won Sydney, even though they easily lost 6pm news and would’ve been smashed at 6:30pm. Tennis must’ve been far more popular after 7:30pm then? Or was it the opposite of the other night - where maybe Seven won main channel but 9Gem’s rugby union got TCN over the line?

Bad decision to have 30 mins of news. 1 hour would’ve been better. I didn’t see a point in that at all.

Yet I wouldn’t be caught dead watching for a whole hour. I always leave after 20/30/40 minutes and time shift the weather.
