Kayo and Binge to remain Foxtel pillars

Digital streaming has overtaken traditional TV revenue at Foxtel Media for the first time, as its chief previews ambitious plans for both sport and entertainment content.

“In the last 12 months we passed a significant milestone – for the first time in Foxtel Media’s history we were generating more ad revenue from digital (Kayo and Binge) than we were from linear TV.”

However, he noted it’s not all roses. The recent July ad revenue numbers were not good. “They were probably one of… the worst set of July numbers I’ve seen to start a new financial year.”

Total ad revenue was down 12 per cent year on year for the month. “Since then, what we’ve seen for August and September has been significantly more positive,” Mr Frain said.

He expects demand to continue to grow for Kayo – both from advertisers and subscribers.

It sounds like a sinking ship…

Still haven’t add the DAZN app to the IQ 3,4 & 5 boxes yet.

Just had another listen. Audio is much better now.

The pre-IQ3 signal has, apparently, been switched off today.

What do you mean by this? They are all fed by the same satellite signals, and they are still sending out SD signals since I imagine iQ1-2 boxes may not be able to decode HD.

Iq2s can definitely decode mpeg4 HD, they have been doing it for the last decade.

I’m not sure exactly how, maybe the duel-encryption has been switched off? I’m not good with the tech side, that’s just what I’ve been told, that the early boxes get turned off today and the IQ3s go around next April.

Hmmm, well they have been talking about somehow shutting down IQ2 and 1 for a while now so maybe they finally, did it? They were talking about this back in 2017 when the IQ4 came out.

What? I wonder why? They can do everything the IQ4/5s can except full IP only channels. I heard from someone (I think you?) that they were running out of app storage so maybe that’s why. I thought that would have just kept them without major updates for a bit longer through.

It looks like a bunch of SD (MPEG2) encoders were turned off around September 30, as DigitalBitrate monitoring shows:

Someone even renamed the SD version of MainEvent to “DO NOT DELETE MAI”[NEVENT]

There are still many SD/MPEG2 being broadcast by Foxtel (including SD simulcasts of channels in HD). Curiously, the ABC channels were upgraded to MPEG4 but still in SD.

Link to DigitalBitrate monitoring of 160E (note that VAST transponders are also in this list)

They are also still broadcasting conditional access for NDS and legacy Irdeto (Austar), while IQ4 and 5 only use new Irdeto [0x6ab] (like the 4K channels)

Looks like the music channels are starting to get a bit more content, noticed Max was screening an old Paul Kelly Max Session concert last night.

Quite a few metadata fails on the Listnr channels…

*(One song behind)

(Was not the live version)

And there are still ads on these channels?

(This is what is being shown during ads)

I think they are basically just straight simulcasts of the corresponding DAB station.

Someone reported hearing news bulletins on there before.

Maybe Foxtel has given Nightlife access to the old XYZ content library? Or licenced certain archive content?
